What is the best version of Gloria?
My vote goes for Patti Smith's off of Horses. The intro is killer and then the way the band slowly builds and the suddenly snaps into it is fantastic.

I'm sticking with the Them version Van Morrison at the top of his game!

Laura Branigan, jk.
I have to go with The Them. It's just one of those tunes that's amazing no matter who plays it, like Tainted Love. Although convincing some people that Soft Cell didn't write that song can be impossible.

Them +1. Patti's version is great--one of my 2 or 3 favorite tracks of hers--but it doesn't have all that much to do with the song, really. the Shadows of Knight had a rather snappy cover version in the 60s.

This is true; she did deviate from the original song quite a bit. Another great version I have heard is a live version by The 13th Floor Elevators.
