1970's Dyna Comp Clone (???)

Post by retinal orbita »

Just met up with a dude who's listing I saw on Craigslist who builds pedals and mods amps and what not..... he claimed to build the worlds BEST compressor pedal, a +/- 5% or so difference a/b'd against an original 70's Dyna Comp. Now, amazingly, for going to a total strangers house I didn't get murdered or forced into a gulag (it's happened, you know, I watch Criminal Minds every week), and in fact, I played what might be the best compressor EVER. I have no idea what a vintage 70's Dyna Comp sounds like in the flesh, or what it'll sound like with my amp and guitar, but this compressor sounded so so so good, so good in fact that I left a deposit to have one of the 10 he's making to sell. His builds look great, soldering job looked really clean and the parts looked great (coming from someone who has never built a pedal before). I mean, I don't claim to be an expert but it sounded about 100,000,000 times better than the stock MXR Super Comp I have on my board.

ANYWAY, no clips from him yet although compressor clips are essentially worthless from youtube I've found, but I can vouch for the fact that he's not a murderer and quite handy at making pedals and also a really nice guy and seems really into quality parts and clean builds over fancy boxes and pointless knobs, and I will have my Dyna-Clone (that's the name I made up, not his - it's a terrible name) in 2 weeks and will let you know how it sounds.

He also makes fuzz face clones that sounded amazing and treble boosters as well, in really nicely put together packages. 180 for the compressor, 125 for the fuzz's which I'll probably go back for in a month or so. The fuzz's were fuzz face clones and tone benders and they both sounded great.

Anyone who wants his contact info PM me - I'm happy to support a local builder of a quality product....... buy Canadian........ you heard it here first.......... I guarantee next year there will be a wait list............

Oh it's not me making this compressor and trying to market it all shrewdly....... that is plain dishonest this guy exists and his name is Steve......... that's not my name..........

The best, most Script Dyna Comp-like clone I've seen yet is the Whirlwind Rochester. That whole series is awesome, and cheap, and handmade in the USA. Amazing things.
I have original Script Phase 90 & Dyna Comp and I have the Whirlwinds, and the only real difference is they're true bypass.

But I like the idea of buying Canadian -- lots of great (and under appreciated) builders up here.
The not-a-murderer thing is also good to know (no more Reiser unix file system for me :p ).
Good deals done with all these guys
Canada, we put the "u" in satire
