roland jazz chorus 120 or......

Post by nonfiction »

so i'm in the market for another amp to use in addition to my vox ac50cph. i love the amp, it's pretty much got the ac-30 chime but can do somewhat marshally tonez on the second channel. want to explore some other tones too, though... and playing amps in stereo sounds fun. there seem to be two fairly good deals on the local craigslist (which is rare since the closest large city is like 4 hours away). plus i'm in canada, fuck customs fees.

anyway, the choices (on pretty much the opposite side of the spectrum) are:

1. roland jazz chorus 120 for $450. it's got two JBL speakers. would have to drive in total about an hour and a half.

2. orange tiny terror for $425. would just be used thru my vox 4x12 cabinet at the moment. gonna either upgrade the speakers or buy another cab soon though. 10 min drive away.

i play pretty much every type of music. lots of ambient stuff but i like my dirt too and play doomy riffs when i want to scare my neighbors. but also other stuff from bossa nova to shoegaze to funk to noise to shibuya-kei to lounge pop to sunshine pop to jangle pop to 60's psych-pop to j-pop to soda pop??

not sure exactly what i'm asking you guys, but what would you get in my situation?
out on my skateboard the night is just humming
and the gumsmacks are the pulse i'll follow if my walkman fades

I have a JC-120 and a VC30! We'd be like twinsies!

But fer serius, I FUCKIN LOVE JAZZ CHORUSES. $450 seems a little steep, but to quote someone else, they're "built like brick shithouses," and they take pedals like a champ, so haggle the guy and then buy it.

The TT is great as an at home practice amp. Clean tone is fine, at lower volumes, but I'm not too picky about cleans as for me they're just the foundation for pedals.

I'd check out the TT first since it's so close by. If it doesn't make you forget about the JC-120 right away you can always go back to that.

JC120
f'srs, sickest cleans and if you have ANY semi hollow overdriving it and kick the chorus on you're pat metheny

how's 450 steep? I rarely see em drop below that. and by rarely I mean never have.

I had a jc120 for about 10 years. It always sounded great and the only thing that could break it was some bitch kicking it off a mountain. I dont know if you can say that about the tiny terror but im not that familiar with them. Also if youre playing k-pop j-pop whatever the jc120 has you covered as it is a really popular studio amp over there and just about everyone has featured it on their recordings.

I owned a JC120 since the mid 80s and loved it big time. There was nothing that sounded quite like it for it's chime and jangly goodness. Just sold it a year or so ago because I just didn't have the room for it anymore and needed the cash. I'd love to find a JC60 someday tho. FWIW, I think $450 is about right if it's in decent shape. Mine sold quick for $450, had a lot of interest in it too. It was mint with all accessories.

Jazz Chorus, I got mine for $425 so not a bad deal, but mine is also from the late 70's so...It's also loud enough on two for band practices and yes (as it will never cease to be said) it handles pedals amazingly, also two channels, chorus, spring reverb tank, vibrato, and distortion (really bad distortion but distortion nonetheless).
