The only time I've ever had synesthesia was one time years ago when I took some particularly strong acid.
I always thought that was just a cliche, but it really happened.....at moments when I was hearing things, it felt like I was physically being touched. All my senses were being circuit bent.
Sidenote: I met R.D.J. once when my band at the time was playing a festival in Japan that he was playing too.
I tried to talk to him, since I dug his music. In short, he was not a cool dude.
