FUCK!(amp odyssey part 2)

Post by snipelfritz »

Some of you may remember within the last week I posted a thread asking about new preamp tubes for my AC15CC1 considering one of mine had gone microphonic. In the end, I ordered a JJ 12AX7 through a local music store. Yesterday, I got the call from the store, my tube was in, but it was packaged as Ruby Tubes, but the guy assured me it was the same thing. Sure enough, it comes to me in a box labeled "Ruby Tubes" but the part itself looks like any other JJ I've seen online. I get back and pop that sucker in where my ailing Sovtec used to be. I turn on the amp and it starts playing. Due to a parent who works out of a home office, I can only play quietly(~8-9o'clock on the master) for about a minute. It worked fine.

So today I'm home alone and decide it'd be a perfect time to crank this thing up and see how those tubes really sound. I turn it on, start at my typical solo practicing 11-12 setting and play for roughly 5 minutes. At that point I realize that I'm being a pussy and turn the master up to ~3. I play for a minute, with my fuzz and distortion going, when suddenly I get a small pop noise and the sound quickly fades away.

"OK," I think, "The new tube must've been a P.O.S. and busted right away." To be sure, I plug guitar straight into the amp and put the old tube, which at least made noise, back in. No dice, it's still silent. I try swapping the 2nd preamp tube for the new one. Nope, it appears it's not simply a bad tube. The power light still goes on, and I can see the power tubes glowing orange as usual(that's good right?) but I'm getting absolutely no sound out of the amp. For what it's worth, just two days ago I was playing full volume for roughly two hours at band practice running a 2x12 in parallel to the onboard speaker and had no problems whatsoever.

I'm thinking it's a fuse related issue, but I'm still pretty ignorant to the inner workings of my tube amp and have no idea what that really means. Sorry for the novel, but I think the information all seems pertinent.

Yes, the power light still turns on. That's what baffles me. I can see power is going through the power tubes too.

Only other thing I can think is the input got shorted somehow or something like that.

I just read that a failed power tube can cause a short. That sounds like it might be my issue. Once I replace the power tubes, will there be some blown fuse in the amp console that I need to replace as well?

EDIT: well, I keep answering my own questions. It's the HT fuse. Word on the street is I should have a tech do it, but if I wanted to be a cheap bastard what would replacing this entail? At least how can I find the right replacement fuse?
