the pumpkin pi has a tone bypass right? is that the only difference other than different guitar and amp etc...? does anyone know what diodes were used in either of those examples. and what diodes does eniac mike have in his?
I have been trying to figure out if I can make an IC muff with a diode IC and a quad transistor IC. people have done it but documentation is spotty. here is what I found. the IC's are listed above their respective single transistor equivalents.
transistor array 14 pin dip MPQ3904 NTE2321
discrete transistors 2N3904 2N5088
quad schottky diode array UC3611
also somewhat related, I got 50 2n5133 from smallbear and I have the highest gains in the lot to be Hfe 350 300 250 200. this is going into the original triangle muff v1 PCB clone I got from Peps1 on ILF. the ic muff is probably gonna be perf cause of the two IC's. I have 6 gruntbox PCB's and one of them is going to be NBABMF's jackalope mod. I'm goin muff crazy. I never knew that smashing pump today was that ic muff sound. pretty cool cause I grew up listening to it and my sound always comes back to the late 90's like my 96 fender strat that I bought in 2009.
I think the op amps used make a big difference I would breadboard it before committing finalizing anything especially if you try to use quad op amps. I tried subbing different ones and the only way to get the magic was to use the uA 741 and the 4558.
In general I don't think it's the best sounding muff or anything like that, not nearly as much sustain as your typical muff. It does record well and if you have a huge bass line underneath it and james iha playing some sweet creamy leads on it it sits very well as a ripping mid range rhythm muff. I think another part of the sound is running it into a cranked marshall.
so IC muff = op amp muff? what about just doing it with the quad transistor and the diode array IC's. if its too low gain I can just double up. 2x14DIP + 2x8DIP is actually doable on perf on a 1590b. I have a full selection of diodes including germanium. I might have a diode switch on it too. I just dont know what I like yet.

and now I know whats in a swollen pickle. I have tried it in the store and it doesn't sound anything like the demos. the little tiny trim pots on the front have very different sounds and its difficult to make small adjustments. does anyone know exactly what the 5 pots are connected to. i mean whats up with the other two knobs and the switch.
Scoop is a pot instead of a fixed resistor to ground on the tone stack, and I'd be willing to bet that the clipping control is a pot acting as a variable resistor in front of the first set of clipping diodes.

Got to stir this shit up again, im thinking about building a Mammoth Op-amp Muff but would want to add a tone-bypass. How would i do that? i have only built one pedal kit yet and dont feel to confident to go ahead without asking you guys first. http://www.guitarpcb.com/PDF%20Files/BMP%20OP%20AMP.pdf at this schematic it seems like the tone stack is grounded after C8, would that be the place to put the switch? The Swollen Pickle isn't the same as the Op Amp Muff.
The Pickle uses a transistor array. It's a chip with transistors packed inside of it. So it's really just like a standard transistor muff, but the transistors are inside that IC package. It looks like this on the inside:
You could use it to build a double Fuzz Face, a Fuzz Face + Rangemaster, a Tonebender, or anything else with 4 or fewer transistors.
The BMP that uses the 741/4558 is a totally different beast.
