The Top 5 Albums Thread!

Post by Ghost Hip »

Or if you want to be stranded on an island... what albums would you bring?

I decided to make this thread after listening to Noah and the Whale's new CD. So here are mine:

1. Smashing Pumpkins: Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness
2. Nirvana: In Utero
3. The Vines: Highly Evolved
4. The White Stripes: White Blood Cells (mostly because of "This Protector")
5. Daft Punk: Discovery

Feel free to list runner ups!

Noah and The Whale: Peaceful The World Lays Me Down and Smashing Pumpkins: Pisces Iscariot

bauhaus - burning from the inside

runner ups:
the cure - pornography
smashing pumpkins - adore, SD
ours - distorted lullabies, mercy
NIN - with teeth
gary numan - pure

These threads are usually dangerous, but I'll bite...this place is pretty laid back. There are other bands/albums I'm more into, but I'm going with albums I completely dig front to back...considering I can only have 5.

Brand New - Deja Entendu (props to the local boys for an awesome album during a time of generic victory bands)
The Raconteurs - Consolers of the Lonely (jack white w/ an entire band. nuff said.)
Coheed and Cambria - In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3 (yes there are other songs on this album besides a favor house/blood red summer...)
Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness (first cd I ever bought...cassettes were much cheaper!)
Between the Buried and Me - Colors/colors live (a 64 minutes song split into 8 parts...top album of 2007 and still top of 2008 for me. White walls/ants of the sky made my head explode, and they pull off all of their songs live flawlessly)

Runner up picks are cheating! :poke:

Anything involving Iron Maiden, Satch/Howe/Gilbert/Buckethead/John 5, At the Drive In/TMV, Thrice :idk:

Yeah, but for a completely different reason here. ;)

Talk about serendipity, just two nights ago we re-watched that John Cusack movie -- High Fidelity. I used to be one of those guys: making out my top-5, top-10, top-whatever lists for everything. Uh uh, baby. I finally broke that habit and don wanna go back. :haha:

This is hard but I refuse to break the Top 5 rule. Holy crap this is hard. I feel like if it was Top 5 lately it'd be a whole other list.

No order:
Know Your Enemy by Manic Street Preachers
101 by Depeche Mode
Louder Than Bombs by The Smiths
Rattlesnakes by Lloyd Cole and the Commotions
The Kick Inside by Kate Bush

I also just noticed that 4/5 of those choices were made before I was born or just around when I was born.

This is a toughie. I think, in no particular order:

In the Valley of Dying Stars - Superdrag
Uncle Anesthesia - Screaming Trees
Painful - Yo La Tengo
Nowhere - Ride
Reconstruction Site - The Weakerthans

I may have to revise this forty times over the next ten minutes. We'll see where the mood takes me.
I'm more like a mids-ist than a bassist.

Though the Sunn 0)))/Boris split is Sunn's shinning moment, I'd go with Black One over Oracle for solo Sunn. But then again I'm in to the black metal thing, so it's a given for me.

My Personal Top 5 (no order)

Siamese Dream - Smashing Pumpkins
Loveless - MBV
Red - King Crimson
Second Stage Turbine Blade - Coheed and Cambria
Souvlaki - Slowdive

Honorable Mentions

Pawn Hearts - Van Der Graaf Generator
In The Court of the Crimson King - King Crimson
Islands - King Crimson
Melon Collie... - Smashing Pumpkins
Kick Out the Jams - MC5 (dare you to find a better live album)
Houses of the Holy - Led Zep
Master of Reality - Black Sabbath
Morning Star - Fripp and Eno
Ege Bamyasi - Can (represent)
Just For A Day - Slowdive
Fun House - The Stooges
The Fire in Our Throats Will Beckon the Thaw - Pelican
...and god damn it I have to edit in some Sonic Youth...Daydream Nation and Murray Street.

Oh, and I'll second that Tom Wait's Bone Machine way up there and raise you the entirety of Nick Cave's catalogue.
