Drill presses! Maybe a silly question, but...

Post by the raytownian »

Since I know at least 3 of you on here build pedals, can someone give me a ballpark estimate on how much those things cost?

I really haven't got even the slightest clue what to look for, or what's good, or a reasonable price, etc...

My hand drill just isn't cutting it (no corny pun intended)... I almost kill myself just drilling plastic stuff... Even when clamping shit w/ my feet, things still manage to jerk and all that... and I'm not even going to bother trying to drill into pedal enclosures...

Thanks...

Any where from around $80 to $$$$$$ just depends on what you want.

Harbor Freight has a good selection of usable drill presses.

I found that the floor models take up less space than the bench top ones do.

Also get a good vice such as these 2.

The firs one is good if you have angled surfaces to drill.
The second, once it's set up lets you align holes perfectly.

More speeds is always better, slower for metal and faster for wood.
Too fast and you get those nasty triangle shaped holes.

hope this helps

Oh If you get the second type you can use a Dremel wire brush , a short piece of heat shrink tubing to hold the bristles together and some graphite grease to 'jewel' your cases.

Jeweling = those neat fish scale swirls.

Super, thanks a ton for the tips/suggestions!

Doesn't look like something I can afford just yet, but it's definitley not unreasonable.
