Pipe Amp Uses

Post by proroby »

So I had an idea and thought it was an awesome idea. Please let me know what everyone thinks. I currently run a stereo setup with two fender twin reverbs. I thought that I could AB the right one with a Fuzzhugger Pipe Amp. Then I could use it as a dirty channel, kind of, while getting clean tones from my left amp.

I've read that the Pipe Amp can power a cab. How would the volume compare with the twin? What kind of cab would work best? I've never used a cab extension before so I'm noob to this idea.

A lot of low wattage amps like that one can actually w/ a 4x12, though I'd be using it with something smaller (when I eventually get one).

pipe amps! :excellent:

i have ran my sunn 412L cab with the pipe amp and it sounds good but it doesnt push the speakers enough imo. however, it will rock the 112 from my vox ac4 very well! its not as loud as the 4 watt vox head but it sounds pretty damn good!

here is a clip i made for that jerk futuresailorz...

how much volume are you looking for from this? even pushing a larger cab its not even a one watt amp so it really doesnt get real loud...

I'm looking for it to cut through at a small bar gig level. A dealer friend of mine has a 60s 2x10 tremolux cab for sale. I talked to him about it today and I can get it for a good deal. I thought that i had read somewhere that it was 5watts; I'm sure I'm wrong. Also, I would use it for recording.

*I ordered it already, so either way I'm super excited*

what? :?: you haz no speaker out? :?:

there should be two jacks, the one between the battery compartment is the input and the one on the back is the speaker out. i dont see why tom would change that... :erm:

They don't currently have a speaker out...it takes a special type of jack for that, and I was using Switchcraft (which some pedal builders brag about using for some reason), and the Switchcraft jack design/construction wasn't solid enough to ensure the Pipe Amp is indestructible. I only had a couple issues with them, but that's two too many.

I have! :) But that'd be a completely different project than the Pipe Amp (which is intended as an around-the-house, bathroom, in-the-van, backstage type of knockaround amp).
I've actually done some woodworking, so it'd be a nice wooden head...I'd probably get a team of 2-3 people to work on it with me, to make sure it's an especially good design...someday down the road!

same here. Bought it for the complete portable application. And it sounds really so roomtaking. I have a hell of amps but this one is really fun - more than i thought it could be cause og the size. I'm so happy that i was pointed on it through ilf :)
It is the perfect "play five minutes before going to bed" amp

^^Thanks!!! :D That's exactly what it's supposed to be. :thumb:

futuresailors wrote:Tommy D what problems did you have with the speaker out? I haven't had any issues...

It's not a defective part or cause for concern. It's only happened twice... Lots of people are using this jack, but I'm not about to have this happen to even a couple more people.

Basically, when something's not plugged into the jack, the jack bypasses itself. Plug something in, and it's like flipping a light-switch. The contacts are small and work by having an input jack bend them apart...but I'm not comforted by looking at Switchcraft's design. If the jack isn't perfectly made, and an input jack bends the contacts even a paper-thin amount too much, the jack doesn't bypass signal and the entire amp goes quiet. Since it's designed to be as indestructible as possible, that jack design isn't working for me. I'm going to look into barrel jacks that might have a better design.
