I just remembered the time in 2nd grade when we started very basic HG&D (Human Growth and Development) lessons, and the teacher was talking about the importance of these classes. She finished the part about being serious and she wouldn't tolerate and kidding around. Then she said some to the effect of, "It's important to know proper names of the parts of your body. Say you're playing on the playground and you hurt yourself. You can't come in and say, 'Oh, I hurt my schpadoinkle(or something similar)!' Now this is a diagram of a penis." I had started giggling at that "schpadoinkle" simply because it's a funny word but the teacher thought I was laughing about the penis and yelled at me.

But for the most part Americans seem duped into the blind overkill consumerism culture that has been perped on us. How do you get all these things? Go into 1000's of dollars into debt (or put your parents into debt) with a college education, graduate and assume a subservient role in the workforce and incur 100's of 1000's of dollars in debt (ie "buy" a house,...you see where that landed this economy) and hope that you can get promoted and climb the ladder before your job gets outsourced.

I almost kind of agree with you about most of this; even though outwardly, I appear to be living the life you are raging against. I'm married with a kid, a house, and a middle-class tech job. Here's the thing: I really wanted to live in my own house, not because of the "american dream" or to "keep up with the joneses" or any of that other dumb shit. The reason why is that I REALLY just fucking hate most people, and living in an apartment building forced me to interact with degenerate pieces of shit way more than I want to. Every time I had to listen to my neighbor's screaming at each other, or the old lady on the other side of me's TV way up too loud, I fucking died inside. Now, I can just go home to my house, with all the windows shut, and live my fucking life without all that shit. And I have a tech job because it's really the only thing I'm good at, and it lets me have my house (and being able to work from home 3 or 4 days a week is pretty fucking cool too)

But my wife is definitely a fucking consumer whore like you can imagine. She has to have 6 different coach purses to match every outfit, and looks at every single thing you can buy as a status symbol. I've given up trying to change her on that shit, it was just how she was raised.

So, what are you going to do about it? I hate it when people whine about abstract concepts as if there's some evil mastermind behind it all. If you're going to trash something, come up with a viable alternative that could be realistically achieved over a period of time. Same goes for the Tea Party. Sure, nobody likes paying taxes, but if we don't, the deficits are just going to keep growing.

Tonight, I was so close to having a hundred dollar bill in my pocket and I didn't even know it. My mom offered me $25 if I did some work around the house. I did it, so on the way home from dinner, she stopped to get cash to pay me with. She had already given me a five so she only needed to give me a twenty out of the five she had just received, but as she was handing the bill to me, she realized it was a hundred dollar bill. Being an honest person, she went into the bank and gave it too them. My first thought was, "Bank error in your favor. Collect $100." I wouldn't have looked at the bill when I put it in my pocket, and would've only realized I had been given $105 instead of $25 until later when I was all alone. Gah, oh so close. Why must the fates taunt me so?

Years ago, I went to Target and they neglected to ring up a $10 fan (no register beep, straight into a bag). The chick I was with at the time noticed it and started to say something but I said "ssshhhh... free fan" and went with it. That fan still fucking rules and I still smile about the free ride. I didn't steal it, they gave it to me. Suckers!

Anyway. I like the way warwick.ahoy thinks, but it's the world we live in. I don't like to overconsume or identify my own essence with inanimate products, but at the same time, sometimes buying cool shit is fun. I did really enjoy that 17 month window where we had ZERO debt though. Both cars paid off, no credit card debt, just the monthly bills and nothing more. Now I have a car payment and some dental bills on a 0% Chase card. So it goes.

America suffers from nothing but its own apathy. Everyone knows what theyre doing, they just dont give a shit. Its in our dna to get cool stuff, to accumulate. Thinking to the contrary is what gets us in trouble in the first place....its not our fault we charged up our credit cards knowing we couldnt pay them off or financed that house we knew we couldnt afford. When noone has personal accountability, its noones fault. And its not a new thing either, why do you think we fucked the indians so badly? Do you really believe we felt threatened by them? Fuck no man we wanted to KILL THEM AND TAKE THEIR SHIT. And the africans and the chinese and the indians (dots not feathers) and the south americans and blah blah blah blah blah. The only problem is we cant just kill people when we dont want to pay anymore...or can we? Neither is it exclusive to america. Spacey, I'm liking you more and more each day. This is about how I feel except with a more positive angle. I think there has always been a lot of terrible shit going on. Only recently have we conditioned ourselves to be aware of it, and we're still in the process of learning to give a rats ass. We probably will eventually. The next step is to condition ourselves to do something about it at the expense of our own comfort. Will this ever happen? It certainly won't within our lifetimes or even half a millennium at the least. Shit is getting better, just slowly. That's why I hate it when people talk about "The Revolution."
