Big Muff Pi Mods

Post by nieh »

I picked up a BMP NYC today and I want to mod the hell out of it for shits and giggles. Anyone know a good mod for bypassing the tone knob or adding a noise gate?

I hear those boards are pretty shit and the traces lift easily. Maybe try ordering a board and doing it with that. :idk:

I found a tone bypass mod that only requires soldering a few extra wires to the board. https://docs.google.com/present/embed?s ... _14rg8b3gm

If you look at the fourth picture I wouldn't even have to take off any of the components, just drill a hole. It looks pretty easy either way. I'll probably end up just doing it. I don't have the patience or experience to order a new board. :idk:

Although not as much fun, I DEFINITELY recommend adding a normal power adapter. Those tiny ones are a pain in the ass. It's a pretty easy mod once the hole is drilled.

I recently did it on a Russian BMP. Those enclosures must be made out of Soviet tank parts or something.

Drilling the Sovtek enclosure is a nightmare. The first time I had to to do it, I almost gave up and stuck the toggle switch in the LED hole. You're an ass if you don't know when a BIG MUFF is on haha.

I love the smell of solder in the morning.

The small holes don't really bother me that much after getting an adapter, though the battery adapter hanging of to the side of my Sovtek kind of does.

Dang you got an extra like $150 today...

I almost traded for one with some crazy rotary knobs on it to select the clipping and I don't even know what. It was color coded.

Something like that might be neat.

Or put some fucking sliders in it!

i have a black russian muff. i took the first two diodes of the first stage out for a alot more bass response. it sounds great. however its been on a battery for a while and is starting to sound much better.. if i notice any more drastic changes i think it will be time to put a 9v adapter and a starve pot in

I modded mine with the Pete Cornish-esque mods. Basically, it's two toggle switches, one that boosts the mids (and the volume) so that the Muff can cut through the mix. The other cuts out a bunch of bass and fuzz, turning it a bit more into a distortion. With both engaged it's a loud, grindy distortion. And yes, the traces suck and lift easily.

Here's the thread detailing how to do it: it's really easy:
