Minimalism!!!

Post by letsgocoyote »

The more and more I play in a band situation, as much as I love effects, the more I realize they aren't totally my thing. It all just gets buried in the mix of a band. I'm playing basically indie/rock 'n' roll/pop (as generic of a descriptor as that sounds). Mostly influenced by Pavement, Built to Spill, Belle and Sebastian, Fruitbats, and some others. I know they all probably use a few pedals, give or take, but I myself don't need much...

I just need a decent guitar, and a dynamic sounding transparent fuzz that can do overdrivey stuff, and possibly a light boost for some melodies (which could come in form of a channel switch), and a pinch of reverb (which could come in form of always on reverb on an amp).

so i jsut need a guitar, a pedal, a channel switch, an amp.

i played through someones frontman 65r tonight at a show. the i played through the overdrive channel the entire time, no pedals. the gain and volume were set such that it was sounding like 90-99% clean. and i had just a hint of reverb. the reverb on that amp didnt sound to great, but for just a pinch of reverb it did ok.

i kind of want a frontman 65r. or a super champ xd but i dont know if it would have enough volume/headroom

you should totally look into getting a cc/dc from mellowtone.
though they're going for 3-4 times their original cost nowadays, totally worth it.
for reverb, if you're happy with minimalism then you should totally be ok w/ something like a holy grail, the nano one even :)

Fuzz --> Distortion --> (one special effect goes here if needed - right now Heliotrope) --> Nova Delay --> Fender Tube Reverb --> Amp (clean with some hint of dirt)
That's doing it for me since almost 2 years. But we have a singer and make pop/rock...
For the post rock stuff i used a lot more (2 Fuzzes, Ring Mod, A/B Box, two Amps...)

So what the fuck is my comment? Ah, yeah, it depends on the music you make :picard:

I kinda feel the same way.....I am really enjoying messing with crazy pedals sitting on the floor in front of my amp, but with full band, all I ever really use is overdrive and distorsion. All the modulation get lost in the mix :idk: ....that is why I trade them so often.

right now, i'm waiting for a ghost disaster....I hope it is going to serve me well.....though I planned to use it for quieter stuff. :hello:

I like minimalism, if by minimalism you mean only having fewer than ten pedals on at one time...

:erm:

However, having heard Mr. Mellowtone's music (yay alliteration!), I can honestly say that he really does more than less. More power to you, good sir!

 that HT is telling mellowtone to buy a mellowtone on ebay from some douchebag asking 400. the avatar should give it away. :picard:

on the flipside, he could secretly make them and sell them for that. then you have more monies for more fuzz.

Eric, a CC/DC would suit that really well actually. Throw a Rat or something similar with the gain turned wayy down after it and run them into an amp with a nice reverb and you'd be all set for pretty much everything every one of those bands play.

Beleve it or not I really like minimalism. I when for years where all I used was a 105Q > ODB-3 > Tr-2 :idk: Which I would only use on one or two songs each :idk: I also did lots of gigs without any pedals :idk: But then we started to record... and added extra tracks... So I need my bass to sounds like a synth at times, and a bass and guitar at times... and sometimes all three... So I guess I use FX to make up for the fact that we need more people... That's for N@MELESS, If I ever get a working lineup for Blot all I need is two fuzzes, light and more fuzzy and a boost.
