Woofer Wailer

Post by AngryGoldfish »

I know you don't make these any more, Ryan, but I'm on the lookout for a boutique tubescreamer that I can use to tighten up the low-end of my Soldano, whilst actually adding gain at the same time. Every drive pedal I place in front of my Avenger makes the sound too mushy. I've never tried a tubescreamer (you know? Volume up / gain down) with it, so I'm hoping it will evoke different results.

I know the Woofer Wailer wasn't designed just for that SRV tone that TGP'ers love and only understand. That, and Dr. Scientist are frickin' awesome, is the main reason why I chose the Woofer Wailer above others. It has a switch to add the bass that I might want back in for solos, allows for more gain if I want it, and looks really unique, as always.

What are the experiences with this pedal in a metal context?

The ww is one of the few dr.scientist pedals I haven't had the pleasure of trying
...but a tubescreamer in front of a high gain amp for metal is one of the oldest tricks in the book when trying to smooth out the highs, tighten up the lows, and boost the heck out of your mids.
There are some that call me...morningstaru?

That's what I'm hoping to do. I want more djent from my Soldano. I don't know whether it's the cabinet or not, but it does become slightly boomy at times. I think my pick-ups aren't helping with that, though.

Hey Danny! I think the best way to accomplish what you're looking for is to remove some bass and add some mids... it'll make your palm mutes crunchy and heavy sounding, make things sound tighter. When I do play along sessions with Slayer that's how I dial in their tone on my amp, I boost the mids a ton and scoop some bass and I sound just like them.

You can do that with a Tube Screamer pedal for sure but personally I'd use the Cleanness for it... you can dial in way way more tones with a Cleanness and a high gain amp vs a Woofer Wailer and a high gain amp. (my main amp is a Triple Rectifier and I keep the distortion channel dimed then use a Cleanness to get all kinds of different tones, from lower gain to higher gain with much more eq control)

I'd suggest trying an eq pedal first and seeing what you think, maybe you've got an old BOSS one around or something... scoop some bass and boost some mids!

What's the Elements?

Ryan, I think I'll probably do that. I was going to get the Cleanness, as you know, to dial in a clean tone from my amp, and for changing the frequencies and feel of my pedals. So maybe an Empress ParaEq would be better to dial in a different tone for my high gain sounds, I dunno.

It'll save money doing it this way because I was going to get both the Empress and Dr. S anyway. :yay:
