MXR Blue Box

Post by nieh »

I just got a MXR Blue Box (box logo) and I was wondering if there are any mods for it, mainly for the volume drop. I looked up the C11 mod and the pictures show a script logo box the C11 component is different then mine.

C11 doesn't just make it louder. It makes it brighter too.

If it's not C11, find a .01uF cap that's connected to one of the outer lugs of the volume control.

The volume drop really comes from the blend control setup. There's a lot of resistance on the circuit there... it's like a weird, horrible resistor network that should have been a buffer and a pot. It would probably work fine if you lowered the values of the 4 resistors and pot, but that's a lot of work.

If you can find ANY space at all in the box (perhaps under the circuit board), it would be easier to just stick a booster on the output and call it a day.

How noticeable is the volume gain and the brightness?

It's quite a lot brighter. The volume... you know how it's kinda around unity gain (depending on your pickups)? Well, it just kinda breaks unity. It's not like you can use it to push whatever's next.

I did the mod when i had one and it makes a difference. it doesn't sound loud like the dwarfcraft robot devil but it does sound louder than stock. Definitely a mod to do!!

I can't say how to mod the mxr but when I built my clone I did a few mods. The blend pot is 10k and replacing it with 100k eliminates the volume drop.

also another cool mod is if you short pins 1 and 3 on the flip flop ic (the big 14 pin cd4013 ic) you can move the octave down to 1 octave instead of 2 octaves down. You can put this on a switch too,.

Unfortunately, I tried it, the one or two octave thing, and it didn't work right. Seemed like maybe there was only one octave, but I had absolutely no blend control, and the volume drop was tremendous :idk:

dont short pins 1 and 3. instead cut the trace going from pin 1 to R11. then jumper pin 3 to R11 instead ( or pin13, they are connected).
