So we kinda talked about it in the mastery thread. But I'm curious about the bridge and trem setup. Is it's pain? Strings popping out, coming out of tune, and buzzing?

I've been playing on a CV strat that has a nice setup, and I LOVE it. Stays in tune great, even under hard playing. But the pups are kinda weak, and I've been wanting to try a JM for a while. In walks the blacktop. And it all of a sudden seems more obtanium.

I'm just not wanting to sell my CV and get the JM and hate it cause of the impossible setup. I can probably swing getting the JM and decide to keep the CV at that point. That's probably what I'll do. I'm just kinda weary based on all the things people do to keep them setup properly (mustang bridge, mastery).

On the other hand, sonic youth plays the shit out of theirs and they seem in tune. Erm. Well Nels does!

i almost considered the classic player jazzmaster a while back. very nice guitar and a lot of pickup combinations which was really cool. felt pretty comfortable too, but i ended up getting a telecaster to compliment my strat. if i got a good deal on one, i'd probably buy it. as for the blacktops, they really don't do anything for me. the price is great but the classic player JM blew it out of the water. and something about JM bridges feels really "foreign" to me. idk why

So this seems to go against the general guitar agenda on this forum, but I've never been a big fan of Jazzmasters/Jaguars.
I admit, they're sexy guitars, and I'd love to love them, but they've just never quite done it for me soundwise or feelwise.

Don't get a jazzmaster if you feel the pick-ups on your strat are too weak. Contrary to popular believe the pick-ups in Jazzmasters are not P-90's they are in fact very low output.

Why not get higher output PUs for the strat you like?

Or get a HH Jaguar.

I had a Classic Player Jaguar and sold it after very short time. It was extremely nice to play, I loved the neck but that bridge was too much of a pain in the ass. There are different possible replacements but because of the way I play guitar which involves lots of physical force and brutality and very little gentleness it just wasn't right for me. I had a dude at a guitar store file notches into the standard saddles, but the strings still jumped out of place for me. It was horrible. On the other hand if I had known of that angle thing you can put in between trem and bridge or of the mastery bridge I might have gone for that. But the standard bridge is a nightmare.

Btw. Nels Cline and Sonic Youth are testimonial customers for mastery bridges.

In nearly 20 years of Jazzmaster use, I've never once experience strings popping out on the old bridge, if that happens, ease up on the playing or switch to heavier gauge. I purchased the Mastery purely for extra sustain.

You can always get best of both worlds with a P90 in one of the cases, try Curtis Novak. Get the tone right coming out of the guitar. Haven't tried Lollar, but I hear his work is good too.

If you setup the tremolo correctly it is fantastic, but not many people know how to, including many luthiers. It's really easy once you learn how to do it.

the classic players jazzmaster in my opinion sounds much like a strat.. the pickups have much much more output

The blacktop has an interesting bridge...it's kinda like a JM with mustang height adjustment. A lot of people seem to be getting them just for that (besides being a $450 JM )
I suspect it still suffers from the JM rattle, but you just need a touch of a weaker strength loctite to fix that.

I say it in every blacktop thread...the humbucker/jazzmaster pickup combo is brilliant.
Most JM players end up going with hotter replacement boutique pickups somewhere down the line.
The blackout gives you a nice spread right out of the box (JM neck mixed with a classic humbucker sound).

I also support getting a tele and an artcore.

Yeah, i have Lollars in my 2 JMs (and teles btw) and i like how they open the sound to the stock pickups. Since i tried the first set of lollars i keep upgrding most of my guitars with them and can recommend them
Never tried the curtis novak stuff but drooled already with it...
