Great Destroyer Fuzz

Post by dorfmeister »

Can anyone talk about the characteristics of the "Great Destroyer Fuzz"?

I've seen a video on the internet but I wonder what kind of range and basic tone this fuzz has.

Is it inspired by the band "Low"? Are they using one?

I saw "Low" opening for Wilco on Sept. 13, 2007 in Davenport. Didn't sound so great in that venue but from what I have heard on cd/mp3 they are a very good band.

Alan Sparhawk uses it in The retribution Gospel Choir (i saw) and the uh, other guitarist in the BLack eyed Snakes uses one, I hear.
My fave parts of TGD are the rhythmic oscillation and sub-octave grinding. Certainly odn't expect to tweak any vintage tonez out of it ;)

Every time I try to describe a fuzz pedal with words I feel like just swung a bat really hard and totally missed the ball...so if I do, oh well. I think it sounds industrial and insane.
For the love of fuzz.

Well, it's all subjective, anyway! It really is just for freaking right out.

Would you recommend it for extreme metal?

mmmm, I don't know the rules of extreme metal, but I do know I can usually get a good riffing tone with my tone pot rolled all the way back.

I don't have tone pots, I've got spin-a-taps. :idk:
But, TGD seems like too bad ass of a pedal for anyone to pass up.

Tonefactor has the great destroyer for 15% off...type "fuzz" when you check out. Also works for the BMPWTW

I use my TGD stacked on other fuzz's. Don't get me wrong it is a fantastic stand alone, but I like bringing in it's rhythmic oscillations on top of other textures. I mainly use it just to freak shit out in the middle of a bridge.

this thing is going to stay on my board forever. wow. chaos in a box. sounds unholy when being reamed by a green muff.

i find that powerful single coils bring out the evil qualities in this thing moreso than humbuggies.

Yeah, one of my all time favorites. So thick and wide sound. So unpredictable. Such squealing and sputtery stuttering and hissing and spitting.

i know you hate clean blends aen, but have you ever made one these with a clean blend? i almost always have a another dirt pedal running into mine and i thought it might be cool to mix the two signals more effectively. i guess i could always find something to run them in parallel.

Here's something fun: the pedal seems to create "spooky action at a distance." I posted this at shortscale. I was recording as split the signal immediately after it came out of my guitar. Line 1 went to a DI box to pro tools. Line 2 went to my pedal board to my amp to a microphone. When we played it back line was was totally clean... until I turned on TGD at which points the direct in signal went completely crazy. Total pig fuck time and I cannot explain it.

It's mayhem in a pedal. Hard to control, nigh impossible to repeat sounds, unpredictable, creepy shit, synth tones, drone, devastatingly heavy when you want it to be, harshest thing ever when you want it to be... can cop some solid "regular" kinda sounds, but even those are just a little, uhhh, off.

I mean all of that in the most positive way ever. Thing legit turns heads every time I turn it on at a gig (lots of "DUDE WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT THING!?"), and after a few bong hits at practice.... endless fun to be had. I've used it on synth, guitar, vocals... I'll never sell mine. Most fun I've ever had with a pedal, even if it's not something I kick on all the time. You can play the fucking thing like an instrument, without ever touching your guitar. Fuckin' A!
