what if I bypassed a capacitor in big muff
im new to this. my big muff got plugged into 12v source and blew a 100uf 7v cap. What happens if I put a jumper there instead? this possible?

i suggest to replace it with a cap of higher voltage....don't know what it will do if you jumper but maybe it needs to be there.

Don't jumper that cap. It'll ground the power supply. Just remove it completely.
It shouldn't be 7V in the first place, though...

If you jumper the power supply filter cap, which goes from 9V to ground, you'll get no power because you're shorting the power source. Don't do it. Go to Radio Shack and get a 25V or higher electrolytic cap to replace it. The value is not crucial, but you'll probably want to stick to 100uF if you like how it sounds right now.

I love the smell of solder in the morning.

Also, what the hell is a 7V cap doing in a 9V pedal? Is that the 20% tolerance I always hear about?

That's really weird. It can't be a stock cap then. Plugging in a 9v supply would have likely blown it, and that's what ships with the Muff. Somebody stupid replaced the original cap.
Also, the easiest thing would have been to desolder and remove the cap. That cap is there for power supply filtering, and the pedal will work without it (but it might have more background noise). But it is better to have it in there than not. 47uf would have also worked just fine.
