I don't really chase tone anymore. I just like to have a lot of options available to experiment with. I've had every dirt pedal I care to own, and know where to find those sounds when I want them again.

Successful dealings with: blooghost, starcastic, bronzetalon, theavondon, absent, jero, sevenSHARPnine, magiclawnchair, oldangelmidnight, and others that I can't remember lol

Creating new riffs/songs and then asking the inevitable question: "What would make this sound better?". Then I buy shit to make it sound cooler.

My tone quest is driven by marijuana. I step on my pedals and my mind is blown. I'm trying to actually blow it up by awesome toneZ

Tone searching is about 3 things: the intelligence to know when a sound created is not right; the ignorance of how to make it right; and the jealousy when someone else gets it right.
