I never found out what that stylized "S" means, if it even has a meaning.

It's a universal thing though. EVERYBODY knows of the S.

Whatever that S means, it's lost any real significance.

drawing that symbol is basically the equivalent of sketching a cube... It's meaningless, and anyone can do it, but it still requires some iota of thought/planning (albeit a minimal amount) and therefore distracts people's minds from their boring-ass paperwork, tax forms, and lectures temporarily... and then they waste more time by staring at their scribbly cubes and trying to see them switch directions by focusing on them differently.
