or pretty much anything else Neil was playing on this tour in 1996. i saw him in Concord, CA and was utterly stunned at the depth he drew from material that even i, a decades-long Neil freak, was frankly sick of.
y'all probably won't even count them as "fuzz"--hell, you probably won't count any of these as "fuzz"--but the guitars on the intro from 0:00 to 0:06, which sound like a niced-up version of Bob's old Distortion+ into-the-desk trick.

and then there's this. what can you say about Jimi Hendrix's rendition of the National Anthem? not a lot that hasn't been said before. so just look at the clip. at how deftly he--repeatedly--retunes the guitar in the middle of wrangling an orchestra, a free-jazz ensemble, and a war out of it. at those beautiful fingers, long enough to be a basketballer but too delicate, with the skin a bit grey and the nails bright pink from the morning cold. at the exhaustion (and the defiance!) in his face, and how small the crowd had dwindled to by then...he'd been scheduled to go on around midnight, and by the time he started "The Star-Spangled Banner" it was about 9:30 AM the following day. and look at the tiny assortment of effects pedals, and weep.

my favorites that come to mind immediately: no one used Fuzz and wah better. not even Hendrix (who was apparently introduced to the wah through Zappa)
