power starve utilities

I picked up a used Beavis Devolt recently and I've tried it with a Eau Claire Thunder, Malekko Assmaster, and a few other pedals and I've got to say I'm less than impressed. Just a bit of sputter and then turn it lower and nothing. Anybody really love these? Do they tend to work better when designed to be used in conjunction with a certain circuit--- I am thinking of pedals like the crazy horse and fuzz factory?

i tried once with the eau clair thunder and it did not compare at all with the great destroyer starve settings. I think it has to do with the transistors/IC based fuzz. But at the same time, the wolf computer is transistor based and can come up with pretty crazy sounds!!

voltage starves are EXTREMELY dependent on the draw of the circuit. you can build one that 'sorta' works for most stuff, but voltage starves are all about finding the sweet spot where something really awesome happens for one particular circuit. This could be a huge sweep 1 meg pot, or something as small as a 25 ohm pot. If the impedance isn't right, the pedal will just turn off or never do anything.

For instance, if you hook up a Devolt (100k pot I think?) to a lofi loop junky, you'll get nothing, it just turns off. But, if you build a custom one with a 1k or 2k pot, you can actually get the playback of the sample to slow down. Same goes for a lot of digital delays and phasers, lots and lots of effects etc... you need to be able to fine tune it.

The best way to make one is to get a 100k pot and a 1 k pot and wire them in series. Coarse and fine adjustments.

Interesting....I was guessing that there was probably a matter of tuning the voltage starve circuit to the specific circuit.


I just bought a Fingerprint (now Snowflake) from Fuzzhugger. Great fuzz pedal.
