What to do with Suspect Power/Wiring at "Venues"

I don't know if this has been brought up before and consider I know fuck all about power and wiring in old buildings, but maybe you savvy ILFers can lead the way in talking about powering your rigs in buildings that may have less than snuff wiring.

I gig regularly around this here town and most of the buildings are around the century mark without major renovations. The wiring is likely that old in these "Venues" (bars) or at the least; suspect in the fact that you have no idea really,...what sort of condition the wiring is in these buildings.

I've encountered not being able to power up a Nord Electro and at the same venue on a different gig not being able to power up a pedalboard. The pedals came on but no signal went through. Seems like a current draw issue to me, but in both instances,...the devices were brought home, plugged in and powered up without issue.

This got me wondering if there are devices,...or tools that one should have on them in order to combat or at least deal with electrical wiring trust issues. I don't really trust "power conditioners" to be anything more than rack mount powerstrips/surge protectors. I have one in my rack for convenience sake but to me; calling it a power conditioner is like calling a spade a backhoe. How do you "condition" power? Maybe I'm incorrect in my thinking?

I'm still iffy on power conditioners. I feel like that is what I was using in these instances where problems occured; athough it's a Gemini which doesn't seem to carry a good rep outside of the DJ world. Perhaps it isn't a power condition just a glorified power strip. Even still I've never encountered any issues with this setup in other venues, or rehearsal spaces.

Maybe I'll look into upgrading to the Furman PL-8,...which I've been wanting to do for a while now.
