When recording, do you guys still do the "pedal dance"?
The drummer in my band filmed me recording my bass tracks, and I wondered, while watching (I KNOW, SO NARCISSISTIC), do you guys do cuts to change effects, or do you do everything in one live take?
I sure am WAY too lazy to cut in and out and such. Here's that video mentioned earlier.

I personally like playing everything through in one take if I can manage. Sometimes if I'm just recording solo shit I'll punch in with different pedals, but overall in a band situation it just feels more natural to play it all the way through without stopping.

I punch in and out, but that's mostly because I'm not paying for studio time, and I like layering guitar parts. Thirteen tracks, thirteen fuzz pedals... good times.

I usually cut each section separately when recording. However, before we call a track done, I always make sure that the song as a whole is DOABLE all in one track, so that I can perform it live. That is very important to me.

Re: When recording, do you guys still do the "pedal dance"?
I use surprisingly few pedals when recording.
I actually just finished a recording session about ten minutes ago. It was a piano based track, very mellow, kind of dark, and the only guitar on it was acoustic. I used two pedals for something like nine tracks that went into the song. Only my DE7 and SMMH. One track in its entirety was the DE7 oscillating in key with the song - which came out so much better than I anticipated.
Eventually the track will go on some sort of EP or something and I'll release it. Maybe even for free.
I have a few more songs that I'll probably track in the next few days, and I'm really just thinking about using a single fuzz, or a cranked Soviet.
As far as pedal dancing, I set the pedals the way I want them for a specific track. For example, on this track I used a total of four tracks with my keyboard - one being a rhodes sound, and the other three being cello, trumpet, and glockenspiel patches. Each had delay or reverb set a certain way, but I set them for each when recording - no on/off during. The rhodes got delay into delay. The DE7 set to be on the verge of oscillation, into the SMMH set to a longer delay. The cello had the same DE7 setting as the Rhodes, into a heavy, dark reverb on the SMMH. The trumpet had no DE7 at all, but a huge, dark, washy reverb. Then, the glockenspiel had a normal delay into a bright, snappy reverb for extra chime.
In the event that I go from a clean sound to say, fuzz, I'd likely use two tracks so that both sound as good as possible. That way I can still do it live, but the recording can sound its best.

Why thanks!
I personally find that I like the tone of the pedals going into the clean, and the drastic change that entails, so one take recordings gets that sound best for me.

In all seriousness though, the tone you start with is quite nice. What were you running for that part?

I do the dance. Actually I usually sit to record, which is the only time I feel comfortable sitting while playing. So it's more of a shuffle I guess.
Great tones. I want to hear the full song now.

Here's the song: http://hotdogstorm.com/alex/commander/f ... hnston.mp3
And we've got another video on our YouTube account maybe?
the drummer does all that shit.
But, thanks! We recorded it all at one of our houses. Worked out so well.

Re: When recording, do you guys still do the "pedal dance"?
i usually record my parts at home so i just break them up. so, no, i do very little dancing on the boards. but i kinda structure songs so i only turn one effect on at a time or have a bypass loop that'll turn on/off multiples in one click.
nice playing! and some awesome tones! i like the quick feedback in the beginning.
