yep, i have chromes on my 5-string, and they sound fabulus.
also you don't need to replace them NEARLY as much. and depending on what you go for, the older the better. hell if i defretted that thing, i bet it'd approximate an upright pretty damn well

Roundwounds have a warmer/brighter sound, flatwounds (like you said) have a smoother/"dead" sound to them, Most bass players that play jazz will use flatwounds on their electric basses, John Paul Jones used flatwounds on hiss jazz bass. I would only use flatwounds on guitar for jazz.

I play Chromes on a fretless, the rotosounds are also nice.
