I always recommend it right after dirt, sounds awesome following the grand orbiter too...

Most def right after dirt. If you put it before the effect is kinda lost and does not sound that extreme. But after......ohhhhhh boy!!!! Sounds really awesome on the clean channel with a touch of reverb.

Does anyone know if there is a difference between the hummingbird and the older pulse machine apart from the speed mode switch? They are based on the same Vox tremolo aren't they?

2 different pedals. The pulse machine was a fender amp style tremolo, nothing like the bird.
