i mentioned this here a while back but, but this VT-40 (front loaded, not top) is still sitting down at the pawn shop. it has $600 on it, but the guy says he'd take $400... so maybe i can offer him $300? it definitely works, but im sure it needs a good tune up, and apparently these amps are notorious for being a pain in the ass to service. anyway... $300 would be a decent deal, right?
im thinking it would be sweet in stereo with my Traynor YGM-4.
should i buy an Ampeg VT-40?

$300 or $400 are good deals, and either way you would still save money over the original price to have it fixed.

I have a monster chub for VT-40s (and, really, 4x10 combos of just about any sort) so I say go for it... I sure as heck would! If you get it for $400, that is still a really good deal, even if you have to pay a tech a little bit to go through it. $300 or $350 is a "no hesitation" price for me for one (but, as I said, I do have a predisposition for these amps in particular).

Dude wtf?!?
Around here (Ontario) you're lucky to find these beasts for under $800. They're loud as fuck, amazingly clean and the reverb makes me cum

hmm... anyone really know a lot about these? the one in the pawn shop is a slightly later model that had an added "distortion" control ive read mixed things... some saying "stay away from them; completely different circuit." and others saying "still sounds good, just dont use the distortion channel." anyone know if the ones with the distortion channel get the same tones as the earlier ones?

Yes. Loud. My second choice after a my Sound City 120.
Downside is power amp tubes......
7027a's are a bit pricey...these amps need a VERY robust power tube due to the
high b+. KT88's will work.
Good data here.....

Loud. Really, really loud. Paint peeling loud.

which question are you answering yes to? the later ones with the "distortion" control are capable of the same tones as earlier ones?
