I agree on most of all this.. And with that tracking story, people tell me, just buy a POG it tracks better. Then I say: I like the bad tracking/glitchyness :picard:

carol fuking kaye played a mustang bass so that ends that myth right there.

lets face it: music forum usually suck because people are talking about art which is subjective and most should shut the fuk up and play instead of talking about it. after all it is art and talking the talk doesn't mean you can walk the walk. experience makes a huge difference but even that is subjective. big muffs are the worst fuzzbox in the world "for me"...but not others...so you don't see me on here saying that big muffs are shite and no one should use one.

that being said. there are things that are just wrong and then repeated....taking on a life of their own.
tubes, 15 inch speaks having more low end then 10's (yes, more in the low mids but loose on the real lows)...max barenett les pauls being $25000...
yea ...music forums suck as far as i'm concerned.

whatever.......it's all bullshit anyway....i like the color pink and mix stripes and plaid...so what do i know?

SOUND GUYS!!!!! I swear They all think like that Aen. Every gig I have ever played I am handed a mic cord. I always ask "wheres my mic" "oh plug it into your DI" "no give me a mic" "plug it in" "give me a mic" I ask why dont you DI the guitar? they say because it sounds like shit. Well trust me if you di my bass it will sound like shit. ok myth
Magick does not work its all a bunch of crap.

Older instruments sound better.
... ok this is only sometimes a myth. I compared my ol' Univox LP copy from 1970 to my friend's LP Standard from 2001, and the only discernable difference was that his had more bass, and mine had more mids, and a $250 guitar with super-microphonic pickups sounding about as good as a $2,500 Les Paul is more evidence to the myth.

Never use Digitech.
... mostly true. but tbh, i kinda like the bloopy sounds you can get with the whammy pitch shift, and whatever digital artifacts there are in the reverb usually don't bother me. but anything else... analog plz.

playing slap bass real good will get you gigs.
dude playing slap bass in Sam Ash or GC + "do you play in a band?" = "no"
"no" = 99.999999999/100

Warwicks are ugly
only the headstocks.

Signature guitars are not worth the money
occasionally/usually true, but there are a decent number of signatures with features and tones you can't really get as well/easily elsewhere

DI makes things sound like shit
mostly true. but i'd imagine/experienced that if your bass just sounds good through anything, it doesn't really matter. hooray for Spector :joy:

You can't play hip-hop guitar/do hip-hop guitar solos without sounding like Tom Morello
... yeah, this is pretty much true.

rack effects are better than pedal effects
totes false.
,':{I> ... your move, Trebek.

Especially as it has now bled over into the guitar/bass world.

These douchebags are exactly who I'm talking about:

Let me break it down this way: If you are hearing an actual, real difference in sound between any two cables, power supply cords, speakers, whatever, then that difference HAS to be measurable and repeatable. If what you are hearing cannot be measured with the appropriate equipment, then you are experiencing psycho-acoustics. There's nothing wrong with that, it's just that you're the only one that can hear it, and it's all in your head.

So that's why I wont' spend more than about $25 on a cable. And there's no way in hell you can convince me that an AC power cord is going to make my amp sound better.

Fucking rage.
I hate stuff like this.
Seriously.
Those guys in the video, are everything that is wrong with the world.
:picard:
Electrons don't care if you spent a lot of money on cable, and they can't be polished.

Oh, and a lot of what I said above also applies to mojo components in pedals. They aren't going to make the pedal sound worse (in most cases), but it's mostly wasted money unless you really like how they *look*.

Fucking Victor Wooten

I'm not dissing his skills, but I blame him completely for now every demo of an envelope filter being 5 minutes of a guy going "BITBEDEBOPBITBEDEBOPBITBEDEBOPBITBEDEBOPBITBEDEBOPBITBEDEBOPBITBEDEBOPBITBEDEBOP" as fast as they can.    God forbid you actually let a note ring out to hear how the sweep of the filter sounds.

Or, how about how these musicians (Victor, Jaco and the like) are considered "sacred cows," that if you say anything contrary to stereotypical fanboydom, you're immediately shot down. I consider Jaco a huge influence on my playing, but if someone says "I don't get Jaco" or "I think he overplays...A LOT," I can see where they're coming from. Saying that you don't like a musician does not equate to you saying they have no skills. It means you don't like them, period.

And speaking of Jaco, if I read another "Jaco only needed four strings" type of comment, I'm going to scream. Who's to say that if he was still alive, he'd be rocking a 7 string bass? Who's to say he even cared how many strings he had in the first place? That's tantamount to say that Bach would've never put the cello suites on an electric bass. Bach was an innovator in his time, and I like to think that if he was around today, he'd be making all sorts of trippy, ambient things using the latest and greatest technological musical advancements possible.

aen wrote:Ugh, ok, soundguy rant. Why do the ones who have no fucking clue always work my gigs? Whenever we set up we turn up to our minimum volume. Yeah, it's loud. We'll probably fill the room with our AMPLIFIED electric instrument sounds. Then, inevitably, the Acoustic Christian Soundguy will ask us all to turn down. Well, sorry dude, we can't turn the cymbals down, so we need our amps about here. If they are too loud for your soundboard (Can't really imagine that) DONT MIC THEM. We have the watts to fill this room. We also have onboard EQs, and plenty of experience, so our sound comes out of the amps "ready for the listener"
So just mic the kick drum, give me two DI's for the electronics, and give me a fucking 58 to scream into and we'll kill this fucking show.

Duuuude.....

I did a theatre run of "Jekyll & Hyde" last May. Electric bass in a 16 piece orchestra, so I brought my small amp (at the time, a Gallien-Krueger MB150S combo). I get into the pit, and ask the soundguy where my DI cable is (you can't mic a bass cabinet in a theatre pit; it just doesn't work), and he says "Oh, your amp is way too big for this venue." I comment "Really? It's about 90w, which for the size of this group should be great for a pit monitor, allowing you to run me in the house." The guy argues with me, so I drop it.

During the rehearsal that night, the music director is getting notes from the sound guy that I'm playing too loud. So, I tell her that the next song I'm not going to play - AT ALL - and see what he says. The next song comes and goes, and the soundguy again complains about the bass. At this point, the music director loudly proclaims that I didn't play the last song and he needs to learn how to do his job.

Oh yes, the clean blend issue and DI. :whateva:

My old bands guitarists got used to back me up on this. The solo guitarist had two pedals, the rhthm guitarist none what so ever, I used to carry a small briefcase with ALWAYS the least minimum of five pedals. And STILL the soundguys wanted as a default to DI the bass STRAIGHT BEFORE THE DIRTZ!  I mean HOW THE FUCK do You come up with that kind of idea when You look at my goddamn PEDALBOARD.

And why they always presented this great, new, novel idea as an idea of their own last weekend invention, or how come they were never prepared when I said my signalchain is designed to do exactly that, with sounds I like.

All this was history when we started to use a soundguy of our own.

Mudfuzz wrote:One of the big ones [with bassists] is octave pedals and tracking. It is amazing how much BS there is out there on analog octaver tracking. Also the MXR Blue Box and how it works on bass. I love octave effects and own a bunch [7ish] of them so I feel I have some understanding on how the sound and how they track. First For the most part all analog one octave down Octavers track THE SAME! Boss, DOD, MXR, Dano, EHX ect all track on the same bass the same, which is around A on the low E, if your tracking is better it is o to the bass/strings you are using AND HOW YOU PLAY, the more fundamental the better. The end. You want to argue this then please prove me wrong and I will buy that pedal.

Tryyy using a Deluxe Octave Multiplexer (If you can find one) the fundamental extraction is supposedly alot better than alot of the usual units, infact Howard Davis (Now works for Pigtronix) marks it as one of his proudest designs as it works better than basically all the others for producing reliable Octave Downs.

Other than that I agree with you, just thought i'd put that out there though for one to look out for.
