Calling MM! SVT CL Tube question.

Post by Mudfuzz »

Hey since I got my mesa I don't need to use my CL as a clean amp anymore and therefor fight with the amp for to be supper clean.. so I was wondering about going the other way and wanted to know what tubes would you suggest for maximum pre-amp saturation?

JJ 12AX7s are the most high gain I’ve found.
But they are a bit bright for my tastes.

Check the TAD 7025s they are nice, warm copies of RCA black plates and sound great.
Also swap the 12AU7s for 12AX7s you’ll have much more gain on tap.

Maybe even too much for some TB folks.

12AU7 have a gain of 30 and 12AX7s have a gain of 100

You could always roll back the master volume and increase the gain, but I prefer to max the MV and us gain as the volume control, it sounds much less restricted to me.

If all else fails… kick the crap out of the front end with a nice loud tube boost

FWIW; I swapped the 12AU7 phase inverter in my Traynor YBA-200 to a 12AX7 and really improved the over all sound as well as kicking up the volume.

Cool, cool! Thanks a lot! I knew you were the one to give me the answer that would lead me where I'm going. I'll try most of this, I want the thing to breath fire when needed
