Thinking about buying the Strymon OB.1 compressor... Advice?

Hi fellas,

I've been recently getting around the fact that I might finally need a compressor in my pedal board (to tame my new e-bow, avoid ear-piercing changes in volume when I unleash some feedback... you know, the regular usage). So far I've been pretty impressed with all strymon products I've used, so I'm considering purchasing
the strymon compressor OB.1, which also includes some clean boost that really comes in handy in my situation.

The thing is, I've never tried one, and who knows, this could be the ugly duckling of the strymon lineup, so I'd like to ask you ILFers about it. Have you tried it? Is it as good as classics like the Diamond Comp and such?

My purchase depends on your opinion, guys. Don't let me down.

I've been looking for a compressor too. Unfortunately, I don't know a thing about the Strymon one. The Capistan I have, however, lives up to the hype. It's the only hyped pedal I ever bought that I honestly was really satisfied with.

I have, however, tried the Diamond Compressor, MXR Compressor, Boss Compressor, Barber Tone Press Compressor, as well as the 4 and 2 knob Keeleys.



He wins by a landslide. I just think he sounds real great. And I'm normally that guy who says, "Oh, that's the popular pedal and it's dumb." But it just sounds too good.. I want it.

And again, it's true that it's been hyped to the max, but there must be something in the water definitely. I'll add that one to my list. Still, I'd like to learn about the Strymon since it's so new in comparison.

I forgot that I also tried the Wampler Ego Compressor, and THAT was my favorite.

I recently purchased a Bogner Duende Combo and unfortunately my Wampler Ego became instantly useless.

The tone control even when set to zero - adds brightness, totally altering the tone on the amp. It wasn't as noticeable on a ZT lunchbox or a old Jansen (fender tube clone) or even a cheap Vox Pathfinder, but on the Bogner was like an ice-pick. Turn up the tone and it got worse (I tend to have the Bogner with brightness anyhow).

That being said, it is a fantastic compressor in that the blend switch allows that wet/dry blend. Mine will probably be up for trade soon along with my Empress EQ, which also became redundant. Sucks, since I like compressor for rockabilly and bluegrass styles.

Yeah, I've seen that kind of behaviour with the MXR Dynacomp and different kinds of amps. Some compressors really turn into crap
when you switch your regular marshall (highly compressed already) to an extremely dynamic amp like a cool-ass bogner. The fake tits are instantly noticeable, that's why I want to proceed with caution on this subject. I always thought I hated compressors and you really make me remember why. Gotta be extra-careful!!
