Where Do You Jerks Put Your Mellowtone Hi-5?
...or other slightly-dirty boost?
I currently have a very small fuzz board which goes FH AB-Synth > Rat > Hi-5 > Small Stone Nano.
I really love the simplicity and sound of the Hi-5, but in pedalboard pics, I've seen just as many people put it at the front of their chain as at the end. I also wonder about your opinions on putting modulation (i.e. Small Stone) AFTER a slighty-dirty boost, and what some of you would do in that situation. My Rat is on 95% of the time for our songs, and I use the Hi-5 primarily for solos (Level @ 1 o'clock, Gain @ 2). I know it all depends on EARS, but sometimes it just doesn't feel right of me to not put the Hi-5 last.
How do you like to use yours?

I've always put my boosts first in the chain, because i dig the really intense sound of a fuzz dealing with a suuuuuuper hot signal. Like the fuzz pedal is tearing at its seams. But, that's just me.

Like the aveadonne said. But also because it can help attenuate your signal for tracking pedals.
Ideally I'd have one at the beginning of the chain and at the end of the chain. For ripping up fuzz, better tracking, smoothing out fuzz, and adding some exta hairiness or whatever at the end.

The three pedals futuresailors always has on are his first three: verb>Clean chan dirty chan with both sides on>rat. The boost in front of the rat makes it gnarly with the gain at around 10:00.
I have a fuzz before and after my phaser to make it go wooooossshhhh or screechhwooooscreeeoooshhhhh.
Then my delay has a dirty boost in it...
So basically, this:

my dark boost is always first helps focus wild fuzz if thats what I want and better tracking with synth pedals.

Second, right after my octaver. Right now I'm having my Hi5 and Singing Tree fight it out for the spot... although they sound so good together....

So you guys are talking like using it as an "always on" kind of signal boosty thing? If you have it on at the beginning, do you have any need for a solo boost after it? I'm getting an Algal Bloom and am just thinking about how I'd like to match it up with my HI-5. I have space for exactly five pedals on my PT-Jr., one of them being a tuner.
I'd like to get a Great Wall to use in tandem with my Algal Bloom, again, for solos, and that's another one about which I'm wondering what I would put first. Using the AB as a main fuzz/distortion, it would be great to kick in the Great Wall for some fat-ass solos... think the buzzy solo from "Pink Triangle".
D'know.

Not always on. I use then to add a bit of grit to my sound, not really boost very much. But the Hi5 into a great wall is something else, it just adds this... something... it just makes it bigger and more awsome

I also have my high five at the start, I love putting my fuzzes in pain!

At the start for me too. I do not keep it on all the time. I either use it alone to add a little grit to my clean signal, or I use it to freak out the fuzzes (and my HOG).
I use a SHO clone at the end for volume boost.

Re: Where Do You Jerks Put Your Mellowtone Hi-5?
Guess I'll just have to wait for my Algal Bloom (shippin' tomorrow!) and fack around with it and the Hi-5 to see how they interact. I guess I just always thought that boost pedals were just used for a solo smack.
I don't know if a Great Wall would work very well as a "boost" along with its fuzz for a solo type thing. Again, I'd want the same kind of sound on the solo of "Pink Triangle" by Weezer. Do you think that if I used the AB as my main fuzz, then kicked on the Great Wall AFTER the AB that it would raise the volume slightly if the Level knob was jacked up a bit? Or would you keep the Great Wall in front of the AB?
I haven't had time to mess around with my Hi-5 in front of my stuff... have to do it Monday.

Re: Where Do You Jerks Put Your Mellowtone Hi-5?
I have a clean chan/dirty chan that positioned in such a way that the clean chan is last. So Wah>Muff w/ wicker>Melx2>dirty chan>clean chan>modulation, delay, etc. I feel that my muff and melx get mushy if the clean chan drives them. Clean chan is ALWAYS on, along with the Melx2, and my guitar is set to half volume. With this I can get a little extra grit and volume by turning up the guitar, and if I want a lot of grit with no additional volume the muff is set to unity.
This set up also drives my pulsar and memory boy to make them extra yummy!
