The Devi Ruby!

Post by mynar7 »

So I got my Ruby in the mail the other day and I've been messing with it. It doesn't really sound like the demo videos. It's got this weird gate on it and all the notes sound super synthy. I'm not sure how I feel about it. Tell me about your experiences with the Ruby, and what your settings/rig is like. I'm running a Les Paul into a Vox vt30 set to a clean amp. :omg:

I'd like to try a SM though.

Well I was messing the Aenima and it sounds pretty much like the demo she has, but my hoof pretty much covers that territory and cuts through the mix better. Idk, it's pretty gnarly, but I just sold it because I want to buy a dirty bomb. The Ruby might have to go. I just don't know how to use a weird synth sound like that.

I was pretty surprised to see that there are like five new Devi pedals on her website. I must say that I like her new demos too. She seems like a pretty pleasant person despite some of her rants. The demos at least show how excited she is about creating new fuzzes, and I think that's cool. Couldn't quite figure out what the Ruby did, and yeah, with the demos, it's hard to tell any of them apart sometimes. PumpkinPieces's Godzilla demo floored me, but then I got one and didn't like it at all.

I have no use for any other gated pedals besides Devi's US Fuzz. I know I mention it a lot, but it's just something I feel like I always heard in my head (like 10 years) but could never find in a pedal. Not great live, but so much fun to play and record with. The funny thing is that I bought the US Fuzz because of Tom's demo of it... none of the other ones I watched, including Devi's, did it any justice. It's a rare pedal that for me sounded better for me when I played it than what I expected.

I also have a Soda Meiser, which I think is probably the pinnacle of her fuzzboxes. I've tried a lot of her other stuff, but nothing sounds as good or is as useful to me as the Soda Meiser. It's an all around great pedal, and is quite versatile.

All of her pedals are interesting... it just so happens that the first pedal I bought of hers (the US) has totally blown away any Devi I've tried after it, and I can't really say that any of the other Devi pedals I've tried have been as versatile as the SM and/or satisfying as the US.

I think most of us will agree on this, the SM is her best pedal IMO

I always liked the TP based ones more than the SM based ones. The Aenima is still my favorite of all time, and the ND is awesome, too.

Well, I have had the pleasure of playing an Aenima, Bit, and Ruby and they're pretty good. The demo vids don't really do any of her stuff justice. The bit is the nastiest, most evil sounding pedal I've ever owned. I could really get some NIN tones out of it. The Aenima was a very good heavy fuzz. The ruby... idk what the hell she was going for there. If you put an overdrive before it, then it sounds decent. I'm just not digging the lo-fi to synth to farty/splatty tones on the texture spectrum. I love the artwork though. :idk:

She just came out with a bunch of new pedals like this week too. The 90 seems to be the most promising sounding of the bunch, but I think a DS-1 could cover that territory. The hounds tooth and Wolf don't really appeal to me at first glance, but I'll give her demo videos another listen out of fairness.

I might be able to get a hyperion, which gets a lot of praise. I'll have to check out the US fuzz also.

Word up Rygot! You're like one of the only dudes that I see praising the US here and there.

I was initially intrigued by the 90, but fuck, man, you can't capture a decade in a box! It's a neat idea, but maaaaaan... "Drain You" is a SONG, not a sound.

All of the new pedals are variations of the 05 being fed into a DB.
I'm sure if I were smarter I could mod the Ruby with a 90's/hounds tooth toggle

I figured it was something like that, just didn't bother looking into which pedal was being fed into what other pedal
