I had thousands of records at one point. Then thousands of CDs. Then I realised I could rip them all to a single HDD (or a couple of HDDs in those days) and travel with a thing the size of a brick instead of 8 big-ass cardboard boxes. That's a a real boon when you're moving from one continent to another like I have a bunch of times over the last 20 years. It's also great that you can get music by bands you used to listen to easily, and music by bands you might not otherwise listen to. I know what you mean though, there was something nice about the tactile sense of a 12" record with a gatefold sleeve, and each one was special, so you kinda paid more attention to it. Now, I tend to run a randomiser through a couple of terrabytes of music and go from there. Good points and bad points to both I suppose.

Meh, I dunno...

I listen to alot more different kinds of music now than I ever did before the digital format.
Whatever reveals itself to be important, I buy physical copies of.
What I think of as quality gets played alot and is usually archived over a number of devices.
Things that have a kind of pervasive replayability generally get downloaded again whenever my hardware kicks the bucket.
Whatever else doesn't.

It's a good system, I'm happy with it.

I have double backups on separate external hard drives of all my music. On top of that I buy vinyls from all my favourite bands, plus whatever albums I consider classics of a genre.
