Instead of a Theramin...

Post by Connor »

Im looking for something that sounds like a theramin, it could be a theramin. but i want something that can be controlled easily. like it has dots where the notes are, something i could play melodically without hours of practice.
anyone know of such a device?

Could you not use a theramin, then mark out on a piece of card/wood next to it the pitch of each note to make a DIY Fretboard so to speak? A Bit like when people learn piano they write the notes on the keys.

korg monotron or a stylophone maybe?

also, i once used to use a fuzz factory on a oscillation setting with chromatic tuner to hit certain "notes" of a song i was working on.

 I've got your solution! An EQ pedal in a feedback loop.

No joke. I have used this for controlled theremin sounds in the past. Takes a bit of practice, but it'll do what you're looking for.

How about an Otamatone? It seems like a fun thingy, and I guess it's very easy to control... Not sure if it's thereminy enough, but at least it seems kinda musical, and the sound and control seems to resemble a theremin... in a way. And the fact that you can pick one up for less than 30$ makes it quite interesting.

A weird japanese guy talking a lot about it:

Another japanese guy playing around with it

This always brings a smile to my face.

Hmm, how about modding an output jack into this, and running it through a HOG or something like it, and maybe a couple of fuzzboxes...

EDIT: Now the youtube links actually work.

well in my experience with small toy keyboards, it is that adding a jack and because of that listening through better speakers adds a lot of quality, some sound pretty big, so who knows how great this will sound..
