Parallel Universe Fuzz my first DIY

Post by eatyourguitar »

I am shopping for parts on mouser.com from what I can read on the web, everyone uses 16mm alpha pots. vol, gain, tone get audio taper and everything else get linear. knurled shaft with solder lugs seems to be the standard for point-to-point wired pedals. my question is what does it mean on the schematic and on the pot with 100kohm or 100kb. on mouser site it says B100k. can this "B" be ignored?

here is the schematic I'm working from

It'll say "100KB" if the pot is linear taper, and "100KA" if it's audio. Sometimes the letter is moved to the front.

Try pedalpartsplus for pots. They have the 16mm in just the right types for pedals. Mouser doesn't have audio taper with the shorter shaft, and the longer shaft sticks up too far.

Plus, they may be a little cheaper at PPP, and you can find a bunch of other stuff you may need much easier.

sick dude thanks. I just assumed that a volume knob would be audio taper. is there a list of websites for enclosures too. I found a few of them googling around. mouser has every single alpha pot that PPP has. and PPP is sold out on the 100k linear. I just dont want knobs with set screws. I guess I'll super glue the knobs.

Pedalpartsplus sells enclosures in all sorts of sizes!

I recommend 4site, if they have one the right size for you.

You'll wanna use Mouser or Smallbear for resistors and such, though. PPP only sells them at the "per unit" price, where on Mouser you can get 200 for 4 bucks. PPP does sell Panasonic caps in 100 piece bags, though.
It's kind of a pain ordering parts sometimes. Nobody ever seems to have EVERYTHING you need, or if they do it's too expensive.

Yea I'm mad that PPP is out of 100k pots, I went to make an order last night but decided to hold off.

Order all your components from Small Bear and the 3PDT, enclosure, and jacks from PPP. That's the best way to get off easy on shipping.

these are the smooth shaft pots
http://www.mouser.com/Search/Refine.aspx?Keyword=313-1000F linear pots
http://www.mouser.com/Search/Refine.aspx?Keyword=313-1500F alpha pots

I found it cheaper to order from small bear though, they give you the price break even if you mix up values, on mouser you have to order the same value to get the price break. mouser is ridiculously fast though. Most orders ship out the same day and I have gotten orders the next day even with 3 day ups shipping.

mouser is hard to navigate at first but once you get the hang of it they rock. I FINALLY got the catalog from them that I requested months ago and it makes things really easy.

I order pedal specific components from small bear like ic's, transistors, germanium stuff, knobs
I get enclosures, boxes, 3pdt's, dc jacks, 9v snaps, rubber feet, led's, bulk knobs and pots from pedal parts plus I really like the 4site enclosures. I also like their CHEAP mono/stereo jacks. They aren't as heavy duty as switchcraft or neutrik but I like them and they are very affordable.
everything else like resistors, transistors, capacitors, generic ic's, and sockets I get from mouser.

I do go to fry's department stores if I am in a fix for a part they carry all the NTE replacement parts and hammond enclosures. I also have this cool local electronics shop called EPO that has alot of cool stuff.
