save repair Westbury/Guyatone/Ampeg/Rozz ParametricEQ

Post by fe2cruz »

My Westbury-08 parametric Eq quit today. I thought it was a standard
neg center 9V but I may have been wrong. It worked and sounded great
on 9V daisy chain for a whole week but then just stopped.
The Aria ParaEq is probably more reliable and just as cheap but I kind got
attached to the big knobs and sound of this Westbury.

A 9Vbat showed it was pulling 14.6/17.90mA. I couldn't find a schematic
or manual online, but this spec sheet said it should only pull 6mA.

Its related to a few other pedals and has been written up with poor
reliability. Right now if I plug in 9V power supply it makes scary buzz but
the LED doesn't light up. If I use only a battery it overheats the battery
so it becomes too hot to touch in seconds.

Is there any thing else I can check with my multimeter on this thing?
Does anyone have a schematic or know of a better search than google
to find one? Can anyone recommend a good tech/repair service in
southern california that could work on this pedal without a schematic?

thanks,
-c
after this one I'll stop for sure

Hm...that's real weird, the title of your thread kinda threw me off though.
If your daisy chain fit it, it is likely 9v neg tip

Overheating Battery, Something Shorting, Post Gut Shots to check for blown Diode Protection etc. and check the DC Jack is working and the board is receiving proper power yadayada.

Resistance at the battery terminal was .8 ohms. On a battery putting out 7 volts nothing happened,
on a battery putting out 9 volts the battery and a points on the photos got super hot.

I guess I'll try to replace that hot piece, unless you think I should do something more.
I'm so bad at soldering though. I'm gonna have to practice. So I can't just go and measure
the resistance on all the other pieces till I replace that hot one? I'd like to make one
trip to the electronics store if I could. I need ribbon and a replacement for that
burning up piece now for sure.

So as long as I can keep the draw at 6mA like the specs say I shouldn't short out
this thing again right? Are there any other precautions or mods I can do to this
thing that'll keep it from killing itself?
after this one I'll stop for sure
