Fat strings = warmz?

Upsized from Ernie Ball Power Slinky's (11-48) to Beefy Slinky's (11-54) to better accomodate C# standard tuning on my Jag. All of a sudden my Blues Jr. is nothing but MUD!!! Extreme MUDDY warmness !! Used to be so bright ..... Anybody else have fatter strings add tons of warmth?

No. I use 13 -58s when I play guitar and when I play in bari tuning [B] I use 16 - 70s, all mids and clank in less I play with me fingers.

it makes sense....bigger strings can have a heftier overall tone....you're tuning them down to C# so they have to be a bit slacky...and you're playin through a blues jr.
...an EQ would prob fix it for ya, if you wanted to go that way.

i use 11-56 tuned to standard pitch, as i go lower the strings get bigger.
i'm thinking you're pushin that blues jr as far as it can go though...

not trying to derail this thread or anything...but I was wondering if someone could give some advice on string guages? (without getting all TGP on me )
9's (which I use currently) feel too loose and 'spindly'...but if I go much higher than that, they feel like steel bridge cables...are there any compromises I can make?
(i.e. a string guage that's 'in between', or a string material that is a bit more forgiving, even at higher guages?)

Is your guitar well set up? That makes a HUGE difference. You may be able to get bigger strings, and drop the action a bit so they're not too hard to play.

Otherwise, get used to it. It takes a while, but your fingers will eventually stop being pussies.

However, my main problem is the plain strings...all plain strings are pretty much the same..so basically all I can do is go up a guage, I guess?

And my difficulty with heavier strings is mostly because I have small hands/short fingers...
I am in a wheelchair, so my hands are toughened up..certainly not (see what I did there? )

Have you tried any coated strings? Elixirs were butseks on my acoustic...

hey, i changed the Beefy Slinkys for the usual Power Slinkys once and didn't have that problem...

... it sounded pretty massive, but the clarity and sparkle was still there however - it was too hard to bend them (i play in E standart, lol) so i changed them back to classic Power Slinky 011

if i wanted some strings for playing in a lower tuning, i'd buy them again, they're great

Intill you get our hands on a .029 plain G you will never know sheer tone... I haven't found a good source for then in years though and am having to cope with with a wimpy .026
