mrdobolina wrote:One other quick tip for new folks.

I did not have any jacks...

twist a wire around the tip of the guitar cable...goes to input
twist a wire around the tip of the amp cable....goes to output
twist a wire around the sleeve of both cables and connect it to ground on the breadboard.

add a little tape to keep them secure.

hacky I know..but it works!

Dobo

THIS IS FUCKING AWESOME!

I finally got a soldering iron and can't be bothered to get things like jacks...

If you buy one set of Jacks, Switch & DC Jack you can set them up for True Bypass and then just have the Effect input and output wires loose or as Crocodile clips to connect them to circuits to test them quickly Much like a DIY Beavis Board Bypass Box http://www.beavisaudio.com/bboard/

In answer to your questions... R1 sets the Bias (Voltage so yes you're correct on the voltage being too low) the Tremolo type effect was probably what's known as 'Motorboating' which isn't tremolo in its usual sense (No Low Frequency Oscillator) it may well be how Devi Achieves it, I haven't seen the Schematics for the Rocket.
Without the caps and diodes the Transistor really wasn't set up to accept Guitar as its input, it was just Amplifying so that's why it sounded bad... could also be the excessive gain of 3 Gain stages without proper shaping etc.
