advice on a linear output fender twin reverb

Post by tashiattack »

So over the last year I've been thinking about replacing the speakers on my old fender twin reverb. It's from 1982, Linear output transformer 135-watts. I love the amp (even though it's disgustingly loud) but the original speakers (It's still got the original fender speakers) just does not have enough low-end. Don't get me wrong, I still like the way it sounds as is, but I'm trying to make it sound a bit less harsh.

Another option I have is adding a 2x12 closed cab. The output for a speaker extension says 4ohms. So, if I was to pick up a 2x12 what ohms should I be getting/running it through?

Advice? Suggestions? I know y'all are fuzz lovers here so I thought this would be an appropriate place to ask. And no, I don't want to get another amp because this takes pedals so so well :(

I feel like such a n00b.

For the extension cab route...if the amp out says 4 ohms, you'd want to go for that. Two 8ohm speakers in parallel (both speaker+ go to jack+, both speaker- go to jack -) will give you 4ohms.

I have owned 4 of those amps because they are " disgustingly loud ". Properly tubed it is the go to amp for
concussive clean sounds. Headroom for eons.........

Pull the outer 2 or inner 2 power tubes for lower power output.
Try 1 x 15" or a 2 x 15" cabinet for more low end.
A closed back 4 x 12" sounds very nice as well.
