I’ve looked at that mod before but haven’t gone there. I would do this rather than the Ruetz mod any day of the week since it still sounds like a Rat. But there is something to be said for adding a bass-compensating eq circuit after a classic circuit variant.

It's a nice mod. It doesn't add a lot of bass but enough to round up the low end nicely and doesn't change the basic characteristics at all.

I found this one annoyingly bright, and then when the filter is turned down it seems to quickly get too dark. I was never happy finding a sweet spot where it still cuts but isn't shrill. Plus too many clipping options  but borrowing this did convert me to rats and there are some reeeaaally good sounds in there when I found them.

I really don't need another rat (or really another dirt pedal) but those Wave Cannon mkIII videos are making me feel things.

My favorite rat is my super electric buzzaround….anybody else here feel like the buzzaround is the precursor to the rat? It cuts a bit of lows, has that raunchy mids push and covers slightly gated drive through fuzzstortion.

My other favorite is the Dead Air Feral. Really affordable and quite capable with six knobs, if you like low gain rat tones this opens up those options quite a bit. But it can do high gain quite well, too.

I am a fan of the Blower Box. I rock an EA Iron Pig on bass.

question: in my travels i've found that the Rat and Rat-adjacent pedals i've tried were too noisy to work for me, though i love the basic sound. are there any Rat variants that tame the buzz/hiss issue?

I just got the Drunk Beaver Cold Bat and I like it a lot!!!!
Compared to the BSRI Magawa, Cold Bat has a nice mid hump/grind, and sounds more aggressive.
On the other hand, Magawa better shines at low-mid gain duties, and sounds more hifi/flat/smooth, but has way more rumble/push going on in the low-end/subbass side of the frequency spectrum: Cold Bat doesn't come closer even with the highest Fat setting.
TBH at first I was a bit skeptical about the Op-amp selector, but there are some noticeable nuance differences in texture between both positions (especially in the Distortion range between 11 to 3 o'clock): West (original LM308) is more focused/flat and full, while East (NOS ex-soviet 308 clone) is more harsh and has a kind of cocky mid boost (and you can ear the differences a lot by listening only to the pedal noise floor).
If you wanna grab one it's indeed a very cool RAT with many options.

Can't believe I haven't replied to this thread and said "Fuzzrocious Cat Tail" yet. And if I have, I can't believe I'm not able to find the reply even though it's there.
:picard:

I just loooove it. It's my go to pedal for bass but sounds real nice on guitar too. It's one of the last pedals I'd get rid of, I think. It's just so easy to use, easy to tweak and always sounds great.

I had to check if fuzzrocious was still around since no one recommended it.

I don't know what it is but for some reason they manage to evade the hype a lot, which is strange considering their prices, how nice they are to deal with and how cool their stuff is. Almost always comes with a very straight forward user friendly flexible side and then another more weird one.
