Loudest Fuzzes

Post by dugwolf »

So I have a couple of muffs and I’m tired of cranking the volume only to have it be at unity or maybe barely above. I’ve tried the Macias trick of turning everything down in front which works well. I’m just wondering what’s out there that has a huge volume boost. Preferably a fuzz that has a flat EQ or at least the capability of being somewhat flat and not scooped. What are the loudest fuzzes these days? Help me ILF!

Well, off the top of my head, Basic Audio fuzzes generally have lots of volume on tap.

WEM Project V clones should have a ton of output. I have only tried the Dead Air, but I imagine they all have similar output.

I don't really build anything anymore, but I personally use a silicon FF type pedal that I built as my main distortion and it has a ton of output.

DBA fuzz war is quite loud from what I remember- why not just put a clean boost after the muff though? I think that’s basically what any “loud” fuzzes are doing circuit wise anyway- boosting the output gain, right?

I agree with this wholeheartedly, as I was gonna recommend the Metal Muff (w/ Top Boost), which can get pretty loud, unless EHX changed something to it recently. I can't recall if that boost is an LBP-1, but it woodn't sooprize me :p Manny other companies have created this "secrete" sauze IIRC :trippy:

Otherwise? I wish these were always availibble and/or always on :snax:

Aren’t Meatheads a muff circuit? Those are loud. If you are asking about something recent, or a sleeper pedal, I dunno.

Meatheads are based off the two transistor colorsound "one-knob" fuzz. Which is basically a fuzzface.

The Hizumitas has a ridiculous amount of boost on it.

Another kudos on the Hizumitas (used to have a DIY clone)!

Other very loud fuzzes I own are (aka unity volume around 9-10 o'clock):
MASF Epilepsy
Gehirn Enterprises Noise Wash
Electrograve Ripper Fuzz & Experimental Fuzz mk2
Lastgasp Art Lab 046 Sooperfuzz

iirc the crazier settings on the dba apocalypse reach unity at a touch above zero on the volume. just insane amount of output to smash into the next thing

I would look at what our boy Alec @ MAE is doing - part garden, black math, ect - all are loud as fuck.

One knobbers for the win. Love my Nine of Swords Tyrant (meathead clone). Never tried a Speaker Cranker, but I would be disappointed if it wasn't as loud as its name.

I tend to run dirt pedals really loud on the volume. Pedals/Companies I did not need to crank the volume on because they are loud af:

- MAE!! Maybe, Yes, No, Cascader, Fuzz Lab.
- Death By Audio Evil Filter, Apocalypse, and Spacebender
- Devi Ever circuits based on Torn's Peaker, Disaster Fuzz, or their overdrives (Soda Meiser/VFM/GZ/etc. are way compressed and I always need to run volume 100% to boost above unity)
- Lastgasp Art Labs Devil Tail
- Mountain King Electronics Megalith
- Dwarfcraft Eau Claire Thunder
- Holowon / TheSyle if you can find any. Umiom, Furr Fuzz, Mind Eraser.
- Electronic Audio Experiments Halberd and Dude Incredible!
- Dirge Electronics Even Anguish and any other Dirge build I've had in the past.
- Earthbound Audio Supercollider, Iron Pig, and Throat Locust
- Smallsound/Bigsound pedals, TAFM, Fuck, Mini, Buzzz all had plenty volume left on tap.
- DOD Boneshaker, Gunslinger

I think they say the Special Cranker has more output, though I haven't used the OG. It doesn't strike me as super-duper loud, though it isn't a shrinking violet. I rarely go for a heavy-handed boost, though I should try some things now that I'm back to having a tube amp to kick around again. Still, if the Special Cranker is anything to go on, it's more fuzzy than fuzz.

So I landed on a TAFM. Loving this thing right now. Sooooo many different sounds available and a huge volume boost when needed. Thanks ILF!

I’m still thinking I want to find a high output muff if one exists. I’m looking at:

Way Huge Swollen Pickle
Earthquaker Hoof
Keeley Moon
Caroline Shigeharu
Basic Audio Alter Destiny

Any thoughts on these? Are they louddddd??
