I want to start listening to Frank Zappa, but there are so many albums out there and i cant find much info on them. I want a good place to start, anyone out here that has some experience with his music that can make a recommendation?

My favorite is zoot allures.

Bongo Fury and Lumpy Gravy are up there as well.

I started with Cheap Thrills, as a compilation, it showed me a sample of his work. A good point to start would be a boxed set (Can't remember the name), in which each CD has a different era in his career, and then go further on the ones you like more.

"Hot Rats" was my first. I don't know how good of a starting place it is, but it worked for me. It is mostly instrumentals and has Beefheart on it.

I don't view either of those as a negative.

odd timing, I just started to get into him again this past weekend.

if you have time and Netflix watch the two Zappa movies, one is about his first two 70's solo records and the other is about the Muthers in the 60's. both are different but you get to see the early stuff and where he's coming from.

i found i'm really diggin Uncle Meat right now. not too much into comedy music at all but the music is too crazy to pass up.
