My suggestion depends on your amp and source of distortion, but if you have a rig with the right gain then a totally zig-zagged graphic EQ can give you the glass-shattered-with-an-icepick tone that's good enough for doing covers or just fucking around.
This post is almost a year old, but now I know I need to finally buy a Boss EQ pedal & stack it with a DOD Gunslinger & call it a day

Tried your experiment, it does do what you're on about, personally I like that about the V1/V2 (not sure) that I have. But yeah, does mean it's better to use something else for Serious Chugz. Looking forward to trying the dude some day at ILFEU
