2 Questions 1 Thread: TRS Cables & Drum Machines

Post by Confuzzled »

Hey all,

I am about to dive into a midi controller (Disaster Area Designs Qconnect) for my enzo, super neo-matic, and possibly EHX attack decay if Santa put me on the nice list. Is there anything specific about a TRS cable that makes it different from a stereo cable with 2 rings or are they one in the same? I have stereo patch cables but when I look online I cannot find a conclusive answer.

I have a BOSS DR. 550 MK2 which has the Roland R8 sounds along with the same pain in the ass roland programming functions. LOe the sounds, hate having to go back and relearn functions every few months when I pick it up. I also wanted to change to something that did a roll like the R8 without the roldand/boss programming. Any suggestions on a decent drum machine? Alesis? I use my iphone for drums but the rolls or flams don't seem to exist in the apps I'm using.

TRS is stereo, tip ring sleeve. TS is mono, tip sleeve (no ring).

No comment on the drum machine. After way too many years getting frustrated with them, I play acoustic drums and loop them now, much much much happier and having more fun

Thanks! Appreciate the help. Unfortunately I’m not a drummer so i’m still on the hunt for something machine wise that will suit my needs.

Not a drummer either, can't play a kick with either foot for some reason, just doesn't work. But I tap drums on the desk all day long while working and then I realized I should try playing a kick with the left hand and snare with the right and voila, no more drum machine.

I had a Boss DR 880 for a long time, had fun with it but it would run out of memory very quickly. Then tried a Push with Live, that was fun too but not a big fan of step sequencing, found it difficult to translate the beat in my head that I could tap on a desk to the steps on a sequencer. Messed around with the Alese SR16 for a bit but don't recall why that didn't take. Have a 1010 Blackbox but I don't use it as a drum machine and not sure I'd want to as I find the sequencers to be tiny and have a difficult time getting the arrangement I want with my fat fingers. Hope you find what you are looking

The only things I've used that had rolls and fills was the DR-880 or this program called Jamstix. I never did try to play to Jamstix, I only used it to generate fills for VST drums on stuff I had already recorded.
