Sonic Youth - Washing Machine-esque fuzz/drive

Post by retinal orbita »

Hi there....

Looking for a pedal, or combination of pedals that will get me close to that Washing Machine-esque sound.... particularly on songs like Becuz, Washing Machane and of course The Diamond Sea.... I know what they're currently using from their excellent and obsessively documented gear section on their website, but at the time of Washing Machine was probably a lot different..... I have an old Op Amp Big Muff, similar to Thurston (Moore)'s but it's even a little "metallic" sounding even with the tone turned off or completely bypassed, on Washing Machine it seems like a softer, more subduded fuzz....... not looking for exactly what they used but something that might get me closer, less screamy and more..... dull, mellow, relaxed perhaps? Should I be looking for a solid overdive instead, which I have never used regularly before?

BTW for reference I am playing an old SG into a Marshall JCM 900 with clean preamp tubes to cut down on the ridiculously high gain of those amps...... I reckon the guitar/amp combo play into it as well and make it more heavy than it needs to be........ but I'm just looking for a starting point......

Thanks!

I'd try the muff, and just roll back your tone knob. I'd say on Diamond Sea it sounds like the Turbo Rat.

I'm trying to coax alot of the low gain sounds on The Eternal. :idk: I read they used the Honey Bee on that album, so I'm planning on building a clone. And my modded rat plus that should hopefully get me close to their sounds... :wha?:
