Yah, Kris Davis! The more "composed" material made me think of the last show I went to before the pandemic, part of a festival where the night's headlining set was her + Ingrid Laubrock.Dandolin wrote:somethin' in the vein of HA's post above....(especially dat suite)

Though probably the most I've listened to Kris Davis is alongside Tony Malaby and Nick Fraser (who's one of the local guys I used to catch all in the time in a lot of improvised groups). This album is very good stuff.
solo (mostly ambient): https://heraclitusakimbo.bandcamp.com/

I also help co-ordinate Okta, ILF's collaborative community ambient project: https://okta.bandcamp.com

Re: Just Jazz!
Oh, yeah! That Thing/McPhee is gonna warm me up like a cup of cocoa.
Edited to add: my biggest memory of seeing The Thing (nine years ago?! Sigh.) was Gustafsson replacing his reed like a dozen times, which I think was partially performative to show, "I am shredding so hard."
Also them covering Suicide (which I got a nice recording of.) And also a particularly bounteous merch table.

also,

also also: https://www.vice.com/en/article/wdgv94/what-the-v10n2
[and while we're at it, we also ain't throwin' shade at John Gilmore, Odean Pope, Bootsy Barnes, Bayard Lancaster, Philly Joe Jones, Khan Jamal, Kevin and every other Eubanks, Stanley Clarke, Grover Washington, every Piece of the Dream, and the waaaay too long list of others that either lived in Germantown/Mt.Airy/Nicetown, studied at Settlement or cut their teeth in the clubs along Germantown Ave., let alone the long list of local native visitors from South and West Philly that maybe came up through Granoff but surely passed through Germantown on their way as well....]

*but just to keep the piece in the fambly, i've amended my original post

Re: Just Jazz!

srsly tho, getting into the listing of Philly jazz musicians is like the jazz version of the Sweater Song...or something.
Walt is def in the realm of personal hagiography, and adding in J Tac -- yass

there were so many great clubs back in the day...but most were already gone by the early eighties (true for rock music venues as well).
anyway - i've got a Walt interview to link, and i'll try to post the Herman/Walt duet album too a little later
