Just bought the most expensive audio gear I've ever owned...

Hello everyone
This post is not meant to be clickbait, but I hope that those of us who do on occasion deal with loud sounds will read it and consider their ears more in future. For the past four - five years I've been having problems hearing people when they've been talking to me - colleagues, my students, my family, and I've been putting it down to the fact that everyone mumbles so much these days and nobody speaks clearly anymore... and this was I admit something of a bravado front; both my parents are deaf and I didn't want to consider that I had finally inherited the dodgy genetics that causes this problem. I did go for some hearing tests provided by the UK's National Health Service, but each time I passed them without any problems and was told my hearing was normal. I've managed fairly well with my hearing over the past year; COVID has meant all my classes were taught online so with headphones on at a suitably loud volume I could hear everyone really well again (about the only good thing to happen in that year) but as soon as I took the headphones off my wife and son's voices became really hard to hear... and finally we returned to face to face teaching in September, and I could not hear my students in class unless they were shouting at me... I realised I had to admit the issue was me and not everyone else.

So that leads me to the above picture. After being tested by a private audiologist I discovered that I have a -20dB loss in both ears from 4-8KHz, and then a sharp drop from 8KHz to 13KHz that ends in no hearing at all (with some bonus low end loss as well, thankfully only 3 -6dB). I really didn't expect things to be that bad (and I'm still rather angry that our health service classes this as normal hearing, apparently I'd need to be a lot worse off to qualify for free hearing aids). So I've bought the above audio gear... they cost more than most cars I've owned (not that I have expensive tastes in cars!) and come to more than I've spent on anything audio based (guitars, effects, amps, cables, DI boxes etc) combined in the past five years. I'm not saying this to boast, but to warn you - losing your hearing is incredibly expensive. I've had to shelve plans for buying anything new for the considerable future.

My hearing loss is not from listening to loud music at gigs (I've not been to many of those in the past 15 years) but sadly from genetics; both my parents started to lose their hearing in their twenties and thirties, and I thought that getting towards 50 and not having any problems meant I'd cheated that crap bit of genetics, but sadly not. Apparently by wearing hearing aids all day I can stimulate the auditory nerves in my ears to hear things and actually carry on working, which will prolong my hearing and slow the decline (which is a good thought; neither of my parents have ever heard the music my son and I make because they can't hear... which might be a bonus for them, I doubt they'd enjoy it!) and enable me to keep creating sounds and being a creative person!

So this all sounds very miserable so far... but there is some good news. The hearing aids are incredible - suddenly I can hear people speaking to me again (even in noisy environments) - they have noise reduction functions to cancel out background sound, different settings for voice or music, and they weigh nothing and are practically invisible while I'm wearing them (not that I'm vain, but I remember the ever increasing in size devices my parents have worn in the past... and they weren't exactly beautiful things!). They are bluetooth, so when driving I can hear google maps telling me directions over the top of any music being played in the car, and when someone rings my mobile their voice goes straight to both ears which is kind of odd (they sound like they are inside my skull!) but it's so clear, and I've been listening to CDs I've bought in the past five years and have heard whole instruments in some tracks that I didn't even know were there! So there you have it; no need to feel sorry for me, I'm so glad I own (and could buy) these devices, but please do look after your ears - so you can spend that money on GAS instead of hearing aids!

The slight downside is I'm now hearing even more accidents in my own recordings! I didn't realise just how often I fret buzz or don't hit a note quite right and slightly deaden it... ouch... my playing is a lot worse than I thought it was... but at least I can do something about that!

Must have been a relief to find a doc that takes things seriously with stuff like this.

Did you use ear buds a lot before?

Glad to hear it! Must be amazing to hear better again and it sounds more than worth the money!!

I know what you mean about the NHS hearing tests. I know one of my ears is well off on some frequencies because of pressure/irritation issues, and I can't hear anything above 15k (childhood issues not hearing loss), I struggle to come conversations in noisy environments too. But the tests say I'm great haha. I'm not even close to needing hearing aids but I'm definitely worried about it getting worse! I actually do go to quite a lot of gigs, so finally getting the fitted plugs I've been telling myself I should get for years is pretty high on the agenda now. Also quite an expensive "boring" purchase but probably worth 10x as much if it helps preserve my hearing in the long run!

Thanks, damn that would've been lovely... I'm consoling myself with the new free Amplified Cello samples that Spitfire Audio have on their site; I will definitely be abusing those sounds too much in my next tracks!

No, hardly ever (I assume you mean ones that produce sound?) I never liked them because they felt uncomfortable and I prefer larger, over the ear headphones. I did always wear hearing protection at gigs though.

Good for you dude, I’m really hoping I won’t ever have to deal with stuff like this but I’m glad there are solutions out there
Yes I've been kidding myself for years that I was getting better at playing guitar... I have a lot of improvements to make!

Being able to hear again is something else! I had forgotten that gentle falling rain had a sound! I can also hear leaves on trees when the wind blows gently (I could always hear gale force winds!). I've heard a stonechat (small bird that makes a call like chipping two pieces of flint together) for the first time properly in so long that I almost didn't recognise it for what it was, it sounds so different. My son's acoustic guitar (which always sounded good, but very deep) now has an amazing high end that I didn't know it had - when I heard him playing it from another room I thought he'd put it through a shimmer reverb!

I've heard a story about those tests (I don't know if it is true, but it sounds believable). My mother has a a deaf friend (kind of makes sense) who use to work for the Royal National Institute for the Deaf before she retired and she said that the NHS has made the hearing test much harder to fail over the past few years to cut down on the cost of giving out free hearing aids - the NHS ones cost £2000 a pair and they are apparently pretty good, and too many people were failing the test to get free hearing aids that they made the test harder to fail to cut down on the cost of giving out so many hearing aids.... which I can imagine is a waste of money for the many people who get them and then don't use them (my wife has two older male relatives who got them free but never wear them because they don't want to look old / deaf... conversations with these two idiots are painful)

Those fitted plugs do help - I've not owned custom ones, but I bought some that surfers wear (apparently waves hitting you in the ear can deafen you?) and they were much better than the yellow sponge ones. There's been a couple of gigs that I was glad I had them - they do affect the sound you hear, but if the gig is loud and doesn't have limiters then it's almost certainly a good thing.

The aids I own have functions to cancel background sound in loud environments which makes it much easier to hear people when they are speaking at me - my students have to wear masks in class, so I can no longer lip read them, but I can now hear them again, which is great! There are different settings to allow me to pick up voices at range (in a large lecture hall) and even a nifty function I haven't tried yet where if I'm around a large table of people and can't hear those at the other end, I can place my phone on the table at the other end and the phone microphone will also broadcast the sound near it via bluetooth to my ears. It's amazing how much technology there is packed in these tiny objects - they are about an inch long (2.5cm for our more civilised Euro-bros!)... I was thinking if only these parts were a lot cheaper and available to pedal builders; I bet the processor in them could be pretty amazing - I can hear it fading noise levels up and down when it encounters background sound it thinks it should remove, and it's doing complex EQ in realtime - I bet somebody could make a seriously good filter out of them!

Wow those things sound very fancy! Technology is amazing  Sounds like they're really helping you out!

I wouldn't be surprised about them changing the test, idk. Sounds a bit conspiracy but like you say a lot of people get and don't use them so I can see the logic

I can imagine surfing probably would be bad for your ears! A big wave hitting right in there, ouch! I've been wearing a variety of like, decent non fitted plugs for ages. And they help a lot but it's just annoying finding one that fits right and sounds ok

I'm glad it was of some use. If her hearing is bad and you can afford it / get your government to pay for it I totally recommend doing it - apparently the earlier you start using these sorts of hearing aids, the longer you preserve your hearing for - by giving the nerves that are not hearing sounds much something louder to listen to, that stimulates them to continue to function - otherwise they tend to stop working because they don't think they are needed anymore because they don't hear anything. I really wish I'd done this pre COVID. If she's worried about what they look like, they are almost invisible when wearing them. If she has even medium length hair no one will ever see them - I have my hair cut so it doesn't cover my ears and they are still almost invisible - the tubes that connect the aid to the speaker part are transparent and really hard to see. Here's a couple of pictures (it's surprisingly hard to take photos of the back of your head!)

damn, these are really big, I thought I cropped them down - you might have to right click them and view them in a new tab to see them properly... unless there is some magic I can do to make them display smaller in the forum?

practically invisible and you have to be that close to see anything!

I think drummers really suffer from loud, sudden noises - my audiologist says musicians who play in an orchestra and who sit in front of the brass section also tend to have problems.

Yes, it was the universe reaching out to you to tell me something because it has given up shouting at me because I couldn't hear what it was saying :)
