Cheap or Expensive ?

Post by MaxMaps »

I have been falling back in music again ( thanks to you guys and other factors) and I want to start creating my own guitar tracks. Originally I was going to accomplish this with just bass and then programming some drums but the urge to get back on to learning guitar has been huge. I think if I at least knew how to riff it would not only help with my ideas but help my bass playing as well.

I know noting about guitars - I can go any direction and would rather buy a good mid range instrument or something that gives you stupid good value. I was blown away by the quality of the music man sub bass and if I can get that in a fiddle then I am all for it.

Musically I am all over the board but my heart has always been in Metal (80’s thrash and 90’s metal scene)

Thanks bros!

To me strats are super comfy and thus really enjoyable to play.
I have a 81 Greco SE-380 that I really like a lot. If you can find a 77-84 greco strat for under $500 I think they are a great deal. A mexican strat is also good if you don't want to pay made in usa money.

If strats are not your thing, vintage Ibanez (77-84) are also amazing. Like really amazing.

I’ve got a Jackson Rhoads from their X series and the quality is incredible for the price. Right out of the box the set up was good, the neck is brilliant. Stock pickups were decent. Tuners and but are kinda trash but they’re easy to swap out. It’s my favourite guitar and I’m assuming the rest are just as good.

Yeah if metal is your thing, Jackson (or Charvel) is a good place to start. More speed than traditional Fender/Gibson-style guitars, less arthritis than Ibanez shredders. I would also suggest a hardtail model so you can spend more time riffing and less time fiddling/tuning.

I also recently got a mid-range Jackson and I think it's great if you just wanna go metal. Fast neck, quality is pretty good, very easy to play.

MIM/Squier/vintage japanese strats like JTurbide said are a good shout also, I'm not the biggest strat person but they are versatile and fun to play usually. I have never loved one I've played but I'm always happy playing them. Might work for you! G&Ls are really solid instruments usually as well.

I think ibanez and yamaha stuff is always solid!

When talking about cheap good value guitars, one simply has to mention the Squier CV series. However, I feel like these guitars aren't really the most metal ones, so I appreciate that they might not be for you.

That’s exactly right. What feels and sounds right to a player can differ widely. What kind of neck thickness and shape feels right to you? What kind of width at the nut, what kind of string spacing on the bridge? What kind of bridges do you like and what do you hate? How do you want it to feel unplugged, stout and solid, connected and resonant, light with chimey highs? Pickups can be changed, but I think that always works better when the player is happier with the guitar before the electronics enter the picture.

I've found Schecter guitars to be very good for the price. Good luck finding one that does not have cringey aesthetics though.

I'm just here to point out that while there are many great people posting in this thread, all suggestions that aren't Jackson X Series are in fact wrong.

You could also look for an Ibanez RG321MH used.

Pointy, but not too pointy. Plain Jane, but ready to play.

I honestly think it's hard to buy a bad new guitar these days from the major manufacturers. I got a Jackson JS32 (from the low-end line) last year because I was like, "I wanna play hair metal, but this probably just a weird phase, so get me the cheapest possible thing with humbuckers and a Floyd that doesn't have someone else's COVID on it," and it's pretty decent. Sounds fine, plays fine, stays in tune, love the satin neck. I wouldn't be surprised if their mid/higher tier stuff is great.
