CLANG - Based on the Driving Notion - That's a wrap!

Post by ianmarks »

7/21/21 - Final Update

Today i shipped the last of the CLANGs. I found it fitting that included in the last shipment was Ibarakishi's clone, bringing things full circle. This has been quite an awesome experience! I think it is important to recognize EYG''s and Jonwain's contribution to this project early on. While I know it didn't end the way EYG had hoped, this whole thing would not have started without his effort. Digi2t and Deadendfx deserve a whole lot of credit as well. The PCBs were fantastic and there were a couple of weeks where Digi2t was PMing back and forth with me on putting the final touches on things. He could have easily just have not bothered, so thanks! Finally, thanks to everyone who followed through and pulled the trigger on ordering one. Judging by the feedback left here, it lives up to its name!

Using the Dead End FX boards? He just finished the job tracing and troubleshooting it, so if not his boards, it seems a little too soon to clone based on his schem. If his boards and he is in on this idea of an ILF built batch, seems like a nice collab and I'd be interested, for sure. :thumb:

Yes, I would be using the Deadendfx Dilligaf PCB which is available through their website (along with a lot of other coo projects) for anyone who wants to build their own. I believe it is the only verified board currently available. As to whether they are "on board" with me doing a small batch, I will have to follow up with Dino and report back.

I support this endeavor if Dino's cool with it.

I was pretty sure Dino would not have issue with such an endeavor but confirmed just to be on safe side and am glad I did. As expected, he was fine and gave me some helpful advice as well. It seems the sucker is VERY picky when it comes to a pair of transistors so I will buying quite a large batch to cherry pick through while testing out on protoboard while I wait to see who is interested.

Unfortunately, the thick mod switches between capacitors not resistor values so not doable with a variable resistor (knob.) I could always socket the caps and send a few extra if you wanted to be able to select custom settings. I'd be worried they would wiggle free in time though if you dont solder them in, though.

While converting it to a pot would not be out of the possible realm, it would defeat the possibility of reverting completely back to the stock configuration.

Also, the Thicker mod is simply a psuedo-bootstrap that ties the second stages of the high and low sections together. It ups the gain of the high side through two selectable frequency ranges, but you still have ample control over the gain/tone shape via the high and low controls. At this point, making the Thicker mod a pot would be a bit of a moot point.

Ooo yeah I think I'd be interested in this! :snax:

I have slightly regretted selling my DN for ages, and the tracing thread has made me think about it a lot more this year

Ian built a sick Depth Charge clone for me last summer. I am 1000% interested in a DN clone!

i'm interested even though i already have an OG Driving Notion. would be fun to compare!

EDIT: while playing my DN last night, i was thinking "this is a cool pedal, but i don't really need a second one"...so i'm gonna pass.
I hope that frees up a spot for someone!
