After-fuzz wah for guitar AND bass?

Post by PeterBregman »

I've never actually owned a wah pedal before. They always seemed cheesy to me in the past for some reason. I'm. finding myself wanting to mess with one now though - especially in an after-fuzz doomey kinda way. The thing is though, I'd really like it if there was one that would work well for guitar AND bass so I can try it out on bass too.

Is that a fool's errand? I know most people get bass wah's for bass and regular wah's for guitar. I know the bandwidth and/or the frequencies swept are different for each instrument, but maybe there's a wah out there that's adjustable or just works well for both?

Tell me wah cha know. :p

If you're going to be putting the wah after fuzz it will make much less of a difference between bass wahs and guitar wahs.
I prefer wah after fuzz too and have been happy with standard cry baby and vox wahs with both guitar and 4 string bass. There are new Dunlop wahs with bass/ modern / vintage switches like that mid-size crybaby and that new custom badass dual inductor wah, I want to try one of those!

Actually I would recommend a low-pass filter instead of a normal wah if you use it after dirt. It sounds way more pleasing to my ears. My recommendations are the BOSS FT-2 Dynamic Filter (external input for expression pedal) or *ahem* the KEIO (pre-KORG) Synthesizer Traveler:

This huge beast is the best sounding unit for my wah needs. Cool after or before dirt with adjustable Q (Peak). :animal: Super rare and normally ultra-expensive, though. It has the traveler filter from the first KORG synthesizers (limited KORG 700 reissue is coming this year), one of the coolest sounding filter circuits.

That's good to know. I've had my eye on the CAE MC404 wah, but I wasn't sure if it'd be ok on bass.

Those do look cool as heck, but the prices I'm seeing are not :(

Someone should clone those...

Ibanez weeping demon works for both. There is a bass/guitar switch on it. Also knobs for Q and volume.

Sounds killer, looks uggo tho.

Weeping Demon had blowout prices from Ibanez and was available *used* occasionally at 'steal' prices. Those days may be over though.

I am a MASSIVE fan of my prototype Wilson Freaker wah! it looks like he’s on Ver. 2 now, so I don’t know what differences there are between mine and the current production, but it’s essentially a clone of the ParaPedal. It’s less a wah and more of a ridiculously resonant, synthy low pass filter.
The ParaPedal was allegedly used by both Toni and Geezer on “Black Sabbath” but mine sounds much… thicker… I dunno, like theres a much sharper, narrower Q on the wah used on those tracks.
Mine sounds killer post fuzz on both guitar and bass, but (being a low pass instead of a band pass) it cuts volume pretty significantly when it’s all the way heel back. This might be rectified by the current version. He posts here a bit. Hopefully, he can chime in if you’re interested!

Another rabbit hole to peer down is Snarling Dogs. I love my Mold Spore, but admittedly it’s that hateful ring mod that keeps my interest the most. My buddy has the Bootsy’s signature though, and it FWONKs like nothing else on the planet!

I’ll also throw in for the Weeping Demon, too! It’s got loads of customization options to tailor to your specific sound, and it gets pretty thick.
However, I personally couldn’t get on with it because it sounds more like a WOW than a WAH to my ears, but that was before I’d acquired my current amp/fuzz setup.
I imagine I’d love it for some wailing squalls of feedback alá Jesus & Mary Chain.

 Imagine how badass a doomed out “Alvin & the Chipmunks on 16 Speed” version of J&MC would be! :!!!:

Thanks for all the ideas!

That Wilson is looking like it might be the ticket. The clips all sound thick and chewy in the best way. There's even a mini version, which is pretty great as a space-saver!

Minifooger MF Drive can give you dirt (it gets close to fuzz) or a wah-type effect with an expression plugged in to control the filter, or both at once. It’s got tons of low end, really almost too much for a standard-tuned guitar so I think it would be a great option for both instruments.

I actually bought it as a drive pedal, but it got me back into having a wah and now I use it that way after my fuzzes. The sweep is awesome!

I wish I had picked these up when they were at retail prices. Cheapest one on Reverb is over $400.

I would never sell my Minifooger Ring and I don't regret flipping the MF Trem since I just don't use tremolo ever, but this would have been hella sick. If Moog ever did another run I'd buy one ASAP.

I am not a "wah guy" but once my old noisecore band did a noisecore/funk set and I picked up one of those Dunlop white bass wahs to get a little more groove into our set and it did not work for me (too small) so I sold it but I love the non-click bypass feature and it sounded really good. I would consider getting a full size one. It sounded great on bass. Can't comment on guitar but.... for some reason the full size is a lot cheaper than the mini on reverb? Weird!

The Synth Traveler is dope! I've got one too, definitely the rarest pokemon.

 Yes, that's the right description! I had never thought that I could ever be the owner of one of these awesome units. Good things come to those who wait. :yay:
