How long do you wait before you flip?

Post by spacelordmother »

*sigh*

It seems that the more I refine my sound, and the more gear I try, the more obvious it is from the first few minutes whether or not a piece of gear will be usable for me.

I just picked up a big-box EHX polychorus in a trade, and although it sounds great I can only see myself really using the filter matrix and think it would go to waste sitting around my house. I keep telling myself that might use it for my synths/noise stuff, but really probably not, and its size is prohibitive anyway.

How about you guys? Do you stash stuff away for further exploration? Keep them around for moments of "just-in-case?" Do you kick them back out the door asap with reckless abandon?

It's depressing.

i'm to the point now where I can tell pretty quickly whether or not it's worth keeping...with that said, I have jumped the gun a couple times and had to get the same pedal again.

If a pedal isn't what I'm looking for, I'll flip it immediately. Why keep something that isn't what I'm looking for? It may sound great, but if it's not getting the tone I had in mind, there's no sense keeping it.

usually a few weeks if I'm not strapped for cash (for other pedal purchases)
some pedals I couldn't get rid of fast enough though (record was a goodrich volume pedal, nothing against the pedal but volume pedals are NOT for me)

I usually make myself wait a couple days to be sure I don't like it before I send it off again, but my gut instinct is usually right. I have found that I just don't like compressors. Somethings I really love I have traded away, but I was able to get a replacement pretty quick...

I usually keep them for at least a week if I'm unsure after the first run. Haven't really gotten too many pedals that I said, "nope not for me!" pretty instantly...one of those big line 6 things, a guyatone octave, and one or two others. I usually only get rid of something when I need cash, or I find territories crossing.

That's how my fuzz probe was for me. It didn't always work so I didn't wanna have something unreliable. However, after sending it to Zvex and back to me three times, it still doesn't work, but I know how to make it work when it's time to engage.

Few days to a week. If it's a keeper, I slap velcro on it :D (happened on both ss/bs pedals within a day). But I give pedals 3 or more tries usually. I've found some days I just don't like any effect at all, so I gotta be careful. Some I've had 2-3 times (one of which being a Hazarai, which I'm gonna get another one for good), others I try different flavors of the same effect (compressor, filter) that just won't stick. I'm fairly comfortable with the set-up I have planned/on-the-way (but isn't that ALWAYS the case??).

I usually try to give a pedal a little time if I don't bond with it right away, sometimes stashing it away for a few months then I revisit it. If it still doesn't feel right I'll let it go. Sometimes I dig a pedal but it's use is very limited, those are the ones I hang onto until I really need the cash. Those are usually the ones I regret letting go.

I usually try to hold onto pedals unless i buy something new that covers that territory, or just sounds plain better. Otherwise, its in the "it'll get used by someone ONE day" pile. Which is why my pedal collection is becoming a collection...

There have been a few things I should have kept...it really just depends on how long I've been pursuing the pedal before I got it, if it was on impulse then I'll flip it easily.
